Chaos Erupts in Brockwell Park

Brockwell Live Events to Continue After Court Ruling

In a recent court decision, a judge has quashed a certificate related to the Brockwell Live events, which take place in Brockwell Park, London. According to a statement from Lambeth Council, the certificate in question confirmed that statutory permitted development rights applied to the proposal. However, the council did not grant planning permission, as permitted development is planning permission granted by statute.

The temporary change of use of land, including for events such as Brockwell Live, is permitted by legislation for up to 28 days in a calendar year. The judge’s decision affirmed the existence of these rights in court, paving the way for the events to continue. A new certificate application has been submitted for 24 days, and consideration of the application will not impact the events proceeding.

Lambeth Council has a service agreement with Summer Events Ltd, which has been in place for the last two years. The agreement aims to maintain a free and safe Lambeth Country Show, while also securing funding for the council’s parks. Summer Events Ltd manages the Lambeth Country Show, utilising some infrastructure from Brockwell Live. As Lambeth Council stated, "The events create entertainment, particularly for younger people, and are strongly backed by our diverse communities. They also boost local small businesses, particularly in the hard-pressed hospitality sector."

The events programme is scheduled to take place in late May and early June, ensuring that the entire park is available during the school holidays. This will provide a welcome boost to local families and businesses, who have come to rely on the events as a source of entertainment and economic activity. According to Lambeth Council, the events have become an integral part of the community, providing a much-needed injection of life and energy into the area.

The council’s decision to press on with the events programme has been welcomed by local residents and business owners. As Lambeth Council noted, "The events are strongly backed by our diverse communities," and it is clear that they play a vital role in bringing people together and promoting community spirit.

In conclusion, the recent court ruling has ensured that the Brockwell Live events will continue to take place, much to the delight of local residents and business owners. With a new certificate application submitted and consideration of the application underway, the events programme is set to go ahead as planned. As Lambeth Council stated, the events are a vital part of the community, providing entertainment, boosting local businesses, and promoting community spirit.
