Manchester City’s FA Cup Final Defeat: Shearer Calls for Grealish Departure
Manchester City’s dismal season concluded with a disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace, leaving manager Pep Guardiola with a significant challenge to restore the team’s former glory. The Citizens’ poor form has resulted in them languishing in sixth position, outside the Champions League places. According to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, one player who has underwhelmed this season is winger Jack Grealish, and Shearer believes it is time for him to leave the club.
Grealish, who signed for Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a reported £100m, has started just 16 games in all competitions this season, leading to speculation that he may depart in the summer transfer window. Shearer’s comments, made on The Rest Is Football podcast, suggest that Grealish’s time at Manchester City is up. “His time is up at Man City, he has to leave,” Shearer stated. “For him (Guardiola) to bring a debutant on, a young boy (Claudio Echeverri) and Gundogan on when they’re desperate for a goal rather than Jack Grealish… his time is up, he’s done at Man City, he has to leave.”
Shearer’s sentiments were echoed by former Manchester City defender Micah Richards, who expressed his disappointment that Grealish has not lived up to expectations. “You know what is sad though, the fact that players make a move and sometimes it doesn’t work out for any reason,” Richards said. “But I feel as though Jack’s played within himself. If he’d gone there and been losing the ball because he’d tried to take people on, making the wrong pass or whatever… but I don’t feel like we’ve seen the real Jack Grealish.”
Guardiola has previously explained why Grealish has been limited to a peripheral role this season. In an interview in January, the Manchester City manager revealed that Grealish faces stiff competition from his teammates. “As much as (Grealish) looks at himself, he will see the competition. He has to compete with himself. Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack and that’s why I played Savinho,” Guardiola stated. “I want the Jack that won the Treble. But I try to be honest with myself for that. What happened with Savinho’s delivery in the box? It’s higher than the other wingers in that position.”
The Football365 understands that Manchester City’s hierarchy will be reviewing their squad and assessing which players will be offered a new contract or allowed to leave. With Grealish’s future uncertain, it remains to be seen whether he will be given another opportunity to prove himself or if he will be sold in the summer.
The FA Cup final defeat was a disappointing end to a season that has been marked by inconsistency and underachievement. Manchester City’s failure to mount a credible challenge for major honours has led to questions about Guardiola’s future and the long-term viability of the club’s project. As the Citizens prepare for the new season, it is clear that significant changes are on the horizon.
In related news, Football365 has identified 12 Manchester City players that Guardiola should consider upgrading this summer. The Citizens’ poor form has also led to speculation about the future of other high-profile players, with some pundits suggesting that a major overhaul is necessary to restore the club’s former glory.
