Mastantuono brilla con dramatismo

River Plate’s Hopes Dashed as Platense Prevails in Penalty Shootout

River Plate’s young talent, Franco Mastantuono, will have to wait for his first title as the team was eliminated from the Torneo Apertura after losing to Platense in a penalty shootout at the Monumental stadium. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Platense’s Vicente Taborda scoring the opening goal and Mastantuono equalising with a penalty in the 101st minute.

The match was highly anticipated, with many eyes on Mastantuono, and Platense’s defence made sure to keep him at bay throughout the game. According to AS, “Las miradas estaban puestas en el joven talento del Millonario y, por eso, tuvo una sombra durante todo el partido.” Silva was tasked with marking Mastantuono and successfully limited his impact on the game.

Despite Mastantuono’s limited involvement, Platense’s Taborda scored the opening goal in the 28th minute, silencing the Monumental crowd. The goal came after a swift counter-attack and a poor clearance by River Plate’s Martínez-Quarta. As reported by AS, “El tanto llegó tras una buena contra ejecutada por el Calamar y un mal despeje de Martínez-Quarta.”

River Plate pushed hard for an equaliser, with Mastantuono coming close with a shot on the edge of the box just before halftime. However, it was not until the 101st minute that he scored, converting a penalty after Borja was fouled in the box. The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout, which Platense won.

The result means Platense will face San Lorenzo in the semifinals, while River Plate’s Mastantuono will have to wait for his chance to shine. As quoted in AS, “Tendrá que esperar Franco Mastantuono para ganar su primer título con River Plate.”

The match saw several substitutions and yellow cards, with Platense’s Ignacio Schor and River Plate’s Marcos Acuña among those cautioned. The referee for the match was Yael Falcón Pérez, with Mauro Vigliano and Diego Verlotta in the VAR room.

In the post-match analysis, AS noted that Mastantuono “necesitó muy poco para meter miedo a Platense,” highlighting his potential despite his team ultimately falling short. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Mastantuono and River Plate as they look to bounce back from this disappointing defeat.

The loss will be a significant blow to River Plate’s title hopes, but they will look to regroup and focus on their next match. For Platense, the win marks a significant upset and a spot in the semifinals, where they will face San Lorenzo.

This result brings an end to River Plate’s run in the Torneo Apertura, and they will now have to concentrate on their upcoming fixtures. The performance of Mastantuono will be one to watch in the future, as he looks to make a name for himself in the world of football.
