Aamir Khan’s Ambitious Project: Bringing the Mahabharat to the Big Screen
Bollywood star Aamir Khan is set to embark on one of his most ambitious projects to date, bringing the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharat, to the big screen. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Khan revealed his plans for the multi-film adaptation, which he hopes to begin working on this year.
According to Khan, the Mahabharat will be a multi-film adaptation, much like the Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. He confirmed that he will take on the role of a producer for the project, and while it’s still undecided whether he will act in the films, he assured that the casting process will be based on who is “appropriate for which part”. As quoted in The Times of India, Khan stated, “I’m hoping to start work on this year.”
The scale of the project is expected to be massive, with Khan suggesting that it will require multiple directors to bring the epic story to life. “I don’t think you can tell the Mahabharat in one film, so it will be multiple films,” he explained. “I am looking at the large scale. It’s too early to say, but we may need multiple directors.” The Times of India reports that Khan has been working on the idea of the film for several years, and in 2018, it was reported that he walked out of a Rakesh Sharma biopic to focus on the Mahabharat project.
The budget for the project is rumoured to be around Rs 1000 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever produced. Khan has previously expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that making a film on the Mahabharat is not just about making a film, but about performing a “yagya” (a Hindu ritual). As reported by The Times of India, in 2022, Khan told Galatta Plus, “When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are not just making a film. You are performing a yagya. It is not just a film, it is much more. And, that is why I am not ready for it yet.”
The Mahabharat is an ancient Indian epic that tells the story of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, two groups of cousins who engage in a great war. The epic is considered one of the most important works of Hindu literature and has been adapted countless times for film, television, and stage.
