Adam Selwood Dies Three Months After Brother Troy’s Passing

Tragedy Strikes AFL Community: Adam Selwood Dies Aged 41

The Australian Football League (AFL) community is in shock and mourning after learning of the sudden death of former West Coast Eagles player Adam Selwood, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 41. According to a statement released by his family, Adam died on Saturday morning, just three months after the death of his identical twin brother, Troy.

The news of Adam’s death sent shockwaves through the AFL community, with many of his former teammates and colleagues paying tribute to his life and legacy. Cameron Mooney, a former Geelong Cats player who played with Adam’s brother Joel, choked back tears on live TV while speaking about Adam’s death. “It’s a family I’ve known for nearly 20 years and a family I’ve grown very fond of over the years and loved,” Mooney said. “To hear the news this morning, it’s absolutely tragic … it was only a few months ago we buried Troy.”

Adam’s family released a statement expressing their grief and sadness at his passing. “We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today,” the statement read. “Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel. Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son and brother.” The statement also requested privacy for the family as they navigate this difficult time.

Adam played 187 AFL games for West Coast between 2003 and 2013, including being a member of the Eagles side that defeated the Sydney Swans in the 2006 grand final. He was also an advocate for mental health awareness, having committed to run in the HBF Run for a Reason half-marathon and raising funds for zero2hero, a Western Australian mental health charity, after his twin brother Troy’s death.

WA Police confirmed that Adam’s death was not being treated as suspicious, with a report to be prepared for the coroner. “About 6.20am Saturday, police received a report of welfare concerns for a 41-year-old male in Herdsman,” a WA Police statement said. “Police attended and the man was sadly located deceased.”

Tributes for Adam have been flooding in from across the AFL community, with AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon saying, “Adam was a dearly loved son, brother, husband and father and his loss is a tremendous blow for all who loved him.” West Coast’s head of football and 2006 premiership coach John Worsfold also paid tribute to Adam, saying, “We drafted him at 18 and watched him grow as a player and person. We got to know the Selwood family so well over the years, and they are such wonderful people who our hearts go out to more than anything today.”

The AFL Players’ Association chief executive Paul Marsh also paid tribute to Adam, saying, “The Selwoods are a much-loved and admired family and Adam was a man of enormous courage, spirit, and leadership — qualities that are universally admired”.

Adam’s death is a tragic reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support. If you or anyone you know needs immediate support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or via lifeline.org.au. In an emergency, call 000.
