Wednesday Season 2: Joanna Lumley Joins the Addams Family as Grandmama
Netflix’s hit series Wednesday is set to return for its second season, and the show has just welcomed a new addition to the beloved Addams Family. Joanna Lumley has been confirmed to play Grandmama, Wednesday’s grandmother, in the upcoming season. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wednesday creator Miles Millar expressed his excitement about Lumley’s casting, stating that she brings a "delicious fun" to the show and the family.
Lumley’s character, Grandmama, is expected to play a significant role in Season 2, alongside other new cast members, including Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, and Thandiwe Newton. The show’s creators have teased that Grandmama will bring a fresh dynamic to the Addams Family, and fans are eagerly anticipating her introduction. Millar revealed that the showrunners faced a challenge in finding the right balance with the family members in Season 1, but they have made a conscious effort to include more of them in the upcoming season.
Exploring the Addams Family Lore
The show’s creators have promised that Season 2 will "delve deeper" into the Addams Family lore, exploring their backstory and relationships. Co-creator Alfred Gough hinted that the show will examine the mother-daughter dynamic between Wednesday and Morticia, as well as Gomez and Morticia’s presence at Nevermore Academy. "You can have a family that loves each other, but there’s still issues and clashes," Gough added.
According to CBR, which first reported on Lumley’s casting, Wednesday Season 2 is scheduled to release on Netflix in two parts on August 6 and September 3, 2025. The show’s creators have promised that the new season will be loaded with surprises, comedy, and action, and fans can expect to see more of the characters they love, as well as new ones.
New Additions to the Cast
In addition to Lumley, several other new cast members have joined the show, including Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah Tyler, Christopher Lloyd, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suotamo. Lady Gaga has also reportedly joined the cast in a currently undisclosed role.
Showrunners’ Vision for Season 2
Millar and Gough have expressed their commitment to delivering a satisfying second season that meets fans’ expectations. "The last thing you want is people to be disappointed, having waited for so long," Millar said. "We really want to ensure that the show is loaded with surprises and comedy and action, and that they see the characters they love, but also introduce new ones."
As reported by CBR, the show’s creators have hinted that Grandmama will definitely be coming back if the show gets a third season, which has not been ordered at this time. With the new additions to the cast and the show’s focus on exploring the Addams Family lore, fans have a lot to look forward to in Season 2 of Wednesday.
