Aidan Gillen to Star in BBC and RTE’s Dark Comedy ‘Tall Tales & Murder’

BBC and RTÉ Commission Double Season of Comedic Crime Drama ‘Tall Tales & Murder’

The BBC and RTÉ have announced a rare double-season order for the comedic crime drama ‘Tall Tales & Murder’, starring Aidan Gillen. According to a report by Deadline, the show has been commissioned for 12 episodes, with cameras set to roll in the coming months.

Developed by Emmy-winning director Chris Addison and ‘Love/Hate’ creator Stuart Carolan, ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ is based on the Dublin Trilogy by Caimh McDonnell. The show’s plot is being kept under wraps, but the books follow the interconnected lives and adventures of Paul Mulchrone, Brigit Conroy, and Bunny McGarry in Dublin. As noted by Deadline, the series will also star Ella Lily Hyland, Philippa Dunne, and Packy Lee, alongside Gillen, who is best known for his roles in ‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, and ‘Kin’.

The production team behind ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ is highly experienced, with Addison having won Emmys for his work on ‘Veep’ and co-created ‘Breeders’ with Martin Freeman and Simon Blackwell. Carolan, meanwhile, created one of RTÉ’s most beloved dramas of all time. As quoted in the article by Deadline, Addison said: “I’m frankly giddy with delight to get to team up with the twisted and highly original mind of Stuart Carolan to create this show. We’ve taken Caimh’s wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama.”

Carolan added, as reported by Deadline: “I’ve been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since ‘The Thick of It’ – it’s been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life.” The show has been commissioned by David Crean, Head of Drama and Dermot Horan, Director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, at RTÉ; and Eddie Doyle, Head of Content Commissioning and Jason Butler, Commissioning Editor, for BBC Northern Ireland.

The production of ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ marks a significant collaboration between the BBC and RTÉ, with the two broadcasters also adapting Marian Keyes’ ‘The Walsh Sisters’ and Rónán Hession’s ‘Leonard and Hungry Paul’. As stated by Deadline, ‘Starstruck’ maker Avalon is producing in association with Ireland-based Metropolitan Pictures, which has also produced ‘Kin’.

The commissioning of ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ demonstrates the BBC’s and RTÉ’s commitment to producing high-quality, engaging drama. With its unique blend of comedy and crime, the show is set to captivate audiences and provide a fresh take on the genre. As reported by Deadline, ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ is executive produced by Addison, Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett, Carolan, and Jon Thoday for Avalon, with David McLoughlin, and Catherine Tiernan for Metropolitan Pictures. Caroline Norris is series producer, Gemma O’Shaughnessy is producer, and Addison and Neasa Hardiman will direct.
