Alarm Raised Over ‘Risky’ Tech Deployed at 80 US Airports

Urgent Warning: Americans Face Threat from Facial Recognition Technology at 84 Airports

A concerning surveillance system is being utilised at 84 airports across the United States, sparking fears over the potential misuse of biometric data. The Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) facial recognition system, known as Credential Authentication Technology with Camera (CAT-2), is being rolled out at airports nationwide, with plans to expand to over 400 airports in the coming years.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the technology scans a traveler’s face in real-time and matches it to the photo on their government-issued ID. While the TSA insists that the scans are voluntary, many passengers are reportedly unaware that opting out is even an option. This has raised concerns among experts and civil liberties groups, who warn that the system has the potential to track Americans from the terminal entrance to their final destination.

The Daily Mail report cites Jeramie Scott, senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, who described the facial recognition system as "an invasive and dangerous surveillance technology." Scott warned that the system could accelerate the use of facial recognition as a form of identification, with significant implications for privacy, civil liberties, and democracy.

The TSA’s facial recognition program is already in use at major US airports, including Los Angeles International, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, and Chicago O’Hare. Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Pennsylvania and Delaware, defended the technology, stating that it enhances the agency’s ability to detect fraudulent IDs and increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identity.

However, the initiative has drawn significant criticism from privacy experts, civil rights groups, and lawmakers across the political spectrum. One concern is the lack of comprehensive federal regulations governing the use of facial recognition technology. The Daily Mail report quotes Saira Hussain, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who regularly declines the facial scan when she flies. However, she says TSA agents often respond with statements that suggest passengers have already been identified.

The TSA’s long-term vision, outlined in its technology roadmap, is to create a fully "touchless" and "frictionless" airport experience, transforming a passenger’s body into their boarding pass. However, this has raised concerns about the potential for surveillance. Travis LeBlanc, a lawyer and former member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, warned that the TSA’s placement within the Department of Homeland Security raises serious concerns about the use of traveler data.

In response to the criticism, the TSA remains committed to expanding the program, stating that biometric screening will "improve security effectiveness" and "enhance the passenger experience." For now, opting out of the facial recognition system remains an option. However, as summer travel ramps up and facial recognition systems roll out to more airports, passengers are left to weigh the trade-off between speed and privacy.

The use of facial recognition technology at airports has sparked a wider debate about the balance between security and civil liberties. As the TSA continues to expand its facial recognition program, it remains to be seen how this technology will be used and regulated in the future. The Daily Mail report highlights the concerns of experts and civil liberties groups, who warn that the misuse of biometric data could have significant implications for American citizens.
