A24 Confirms Alex Garland to Write and Direct Live-Action Elden Ring Film
In a move that has been rumoured for weeks, A24 has confirmed that acclaimed director Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring. The film will be produced in partnership with video game company Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.
According to a report from Deadline, Garland will helm the project, which is based on the critically acclaimed action RPG released in February 2022. Elden Ring allows players to embark on adventures within vast environments and dungeons, set in an authentic dark fantasy world. Created under the guidance of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game features a story written by George R. R. Martin, author of the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, which served as the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones.
As reported by Deadline, Peter Rice will produce the film alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as Martin and Vince Gerardis. This project comes on the back of Garland’s success with A24, where he has directed four of his five directorial efforts to date, including Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and Civil War. His most recent film, Warfare, has grossed over $32 million since opening last month.
The Elden Ring game has been a massive success, with over 30 million units shipped worldwide since its release. A spin-off, Elden Ring Nightreign, is slated for release worldwide on Friday, May 30. Deadline also reports that Garland has been working as a writer and producer on multiple films in a new 28 Years Later zombie trilogy for Sony, with the first title, directed by Danny Boyle, set to be released on June 20.
Garland’s relationship with DNA dates back to 2002’s 28 Days Later, for which he wrote the screenplay. Rice joined that company in producing the upcoming 28 Years Later. The director is repped by WME and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman. As noted by Deadline, this project marks another significant collaboration between A24 and Garland, who has established himself as a talented and versatile filmmaker.
The live-action Elden Ring film is set to be a major project, with a talented team behind it. As Deadline reports, the film’s production will be closely watched by fans of the game and cinema enthusiasts alike. With Garland at the helm and a strong production team in place, the film is sure to be a compelling adaptation of the beloved video game.
As previously reported by Deadline, the Elden Ring game has been praised for its immersive world and engaging gameplay. The game’s success has led to a growing demand for a live-action adaptation, and A24 has confirmed that Garland will lead the project. With his proven track record of directing critically acclaimed films, Garland is well-suited to bring the world of Elden Ring to life on the big screen.
The partnership between A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. is also significant, as it marks a continued collaboration between the two companies. As noted by Deadline, this project is just one of several high-profile adaptations in development, highlighting the growing trend of video game adaptations in Hollywood.
