Alex Jones Battles Back Tears on The One Show Over Emotional Tribute

Alex Jones Fights Back Tears on The One Show

A heart-wrenching letter from a late father was read out on The One Show last night, leaving host Alex Jones fighting back tears. The emotional segment was part of a special episode commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

According to the Daily Mail, the show’s host, Alex Jones, was visibly moved as a guest, Eirwen, read out a letter written by her father, Lloyd, in 1944. Lloyd was serving in the Royal Artillery at the time, and the letter was intended for his wife in case he did not return from war.

The letter, which was shared with the Daily Mail, was a poignant expression of Lloyd’s love for his family. He wrote: “This seems a very strange letter to write. There seems to be so much I’m needed for… Firstly, of course, you – because you, my angel, are always first in my thoughts and when I do go into battle, it will be with your name on my lips and your memory inspiring me to fight.”

Eirwen’s emotional reading of the letter left Alex Jones and co-host Roman Kemp visibly moved. Alex reached out to comfort Eirwen, saying: “Thank you, thank you for sharing that, that was… I mean, it’s so moving, isn’t it?”

As reported by the Daily Mail, the twist in the story came when Roman Kemp revealed that despite Lloyd’s fears of not returning from war, he actually survived and went on to write a letter to his daughter, Eirwen, after she was born. The letter has been shared with the Imperial War Museum as part of a collaborative project between the BBC and the museum to collect VE Day stories.

The project aims to collect letters written by loved ones during World War Two. Eirwen’s appearance on the show was part of this initiative, which seeks to preserve the history of the war and its impact on families.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Roman Kemp explained that the show’s segment was designed to “tell your VE Day stories by asking people to share their World War Two letters written by loved ones”.

The One Show’s special episode was a tribute to the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The show featured a range of segments, including an interview with the UK’s oldest surviving World War Two veteran, 110-year-old Donald Rose.

In a separate segment, comedian and war history enthusiast Al Murray interviewed Donald, who is a recipient of France’s highest award, the French Legion of Honour. Donald survived being shot in the leg during the D-Day Landings in 1944.

The show also featured a visit by presenter and actor Brian Conley to the historic Gorleston Pavilion Theatre in Norfolk, which hosted an evening of music and dance to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reported that This Morning viewers expressed concern for the welfare of elderly veterans who appeared on the show’s VE Day special episode. The segment, which featured Rylan Clark and Emma Willis presenting from outside the ITV studio, saw some viewers comment that the veterans looked cold and suggested that the interview should have been conducted indoors.

In response, Emma explained that the veterans had been moved inside for tea and cake. The episode was part of a series of special programmes commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The One Show is available to watch on Mondays at 7pm on BBC One and to stream on iPlayer.
