Bayern Munich Secure Signing of German Defender Jonathan Tah
Bayern Munich have announced the signing of German defender Jonathan Tah on a five-year contract, according to reports from the BBC. The 27-year-old, who has won 35 caps for Germany, joins Vincent Kompany’s side after deciding against renewing his contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
Tah, who made his international debut in 2016, has been linked to several top clubs across Europe, including Premier League trio Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, the defender has opted to join Bayern, who saw former Tottenham defender Eric Dier leave for Ligue 1 side Monaco earlier this month.
In a statement, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund praised Tah’s experience and quality, saying: “In Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence.” The BBC reports that Tah has signed a contract with Bayern that will keep him at the club until 2029.
Tah is currently part of Germany’s squad for the Nations League semi-finals, where they will face Portugal on Wednesday. The winner of that match will face either France or Spain in the final three days later. The defender has been an integral part of the German national team, earning 35 caps since his debut in 2016.
Bayern Munich are coming off the back of a successful season, having won the 2024-25 German Bundesliga title. The club finished 13 points above second-placed Leverkusen, solidifying their position as one of the top teams in German football. The signing of Tah is expected to bolster Bayern’s defence, with the player likely to play a key role in the team’s future success.
According to the BBC, Tah’s decision to join Bayern Munich marks a significant coup for the club, who have been keen to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. The defender’s experience and quality will undoubtedly be an asset to the team, and fans will be eager to see him in action. As the new season gets underway, it will be interesting to see how Tah settles into his new role at Bayern Munich.
The club’s success in securing Tah’s signature will come as a boost to manager Vincent Kompany, who will be looking to build on last season’s success. With Tah on board, Bayern Munich will be confident of mounting a strong challenge for silverware in the upcoming campaign.
