Bears Legend Enters Hospice Care

Chicago Bears Legend Steve McMichael to Move into Hospice Care

A source close to the family has confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that Chicago Bears legend Steve McMichael will soon be moved to hospice care as his ongoing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) continues to deteriorate. The 67-year-old former defensive lineman, who was diagnosed with the severe nervous system disorder four years ago, has been hospitalised recently and placed in the intensive care unit.

McMichael, a key member of the Bears’ iconic 1985 Super Bowl championship team, has been a beloved figure in Chicago sports for decades. He was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last summer, a testament to his impressive career as a defensive lineman. During his 15-year tenure in the NFL, McMichael spent 13 seasons with the Bears, playing in 191 consecutive regular-season games and accumulating 95 career sacks. He was named an All-Pro five times and was a six-time division champion with the Bears.

The Chicago Tribune previously reported that McMichael’s battle with ALS has been long and arduous, with the disease gradually robbing him of the use of his legs, arms, and speech. Despite being bedridden for years, McMichael has continued to fight, and his determination and resilience have inspired countless fans and former teammates.

According to the Chicago Tribune’s 2019 article, "‘Ooooh, the skulduggery!’: Inside the world of Steve McMichael, still one of the most colorful and beloved characters from the 1985 Bears", McMichael’s personality and work ethic have always left a lasting impression on those who knew him. As reported by the Tribune, his former teammate Richard Dent said during last year’s Hall of Fame ceremonies, "Welcome home, Steve. You’re in football heaven. Forever. Much love brother."

When McMichael revealed his diagnosis in 2021, he expressed a mix of emotions, including surprise, frustration, and acceptance. As quoted by the Chicago Tribune, he said, "I promise you, this epitaph that I’m going to have on me now? This ain’t ever how I envisioned this was going to end. … What I used to be is the antithesis of what I am now. This is a humbling thing, brother." Despite the challenges he has faced, McMichael has consistently shown appreciation for his football journey and pride in his accomplishments.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune in 2021, McMichael stated, "Hell yes, I would do it all over again. Because it’s that journey that’s the reward. It’s that climb and how hard it was to substantiate yourself as out of the ordinary. That kind of achievement isn’t just given to you." This sentiment reflects McMichael’s unwavering dedication to the sport and his unshakeable optimism in the face of adversity.

The Chicago Tribune has continued to follow McMichael’s journey, and according to sources close to the family, his transition to hospice care is a difficult but necessary step. As reported by the Tribune, McMichael’s family, including his wife Misty and daughter Macy, have been by his side throughout his battle with ALS.

McMichael’s legacy extends far beyond his on-field accomplishments, with his impact on the Chicago sports community and his fans continuing to be felt. As the Tribune previously reported, he was ranked 18th on the list of the 100 greatest Bears of all time, a testament to his enduring influence on the sport.

The Chicago Tribune will continue to provide updates on McMichael’s condition as more information becomes available. For now, fans and former teammates alike are reflecting on the remarkable life and career of a true Chicago sports legend.
