Beloved ITV Star Trades in TV Career for Unexpected New Venture After Emotional Morning Show Exit

Martin Frizell, Former Editor of This Morning, Embarks on New Career as True Crime Podcast Host

In a move that has been met with widespread attention, Martin Frizell, the former editor of popular daytime programme This Morning, has announced his next career venture: a new weekly podcast focused on true crime stories. The podcast, titled This Much Is True Crime, will see Frizell teaming up with Professor David Wilson, a leading criminologist and serial killer expert.

According to reports, Frizell revealed his new career move on social media, stating that the podcast would delve into some of the most high-profile crime cases in recent history. The first episode is expected to focus on the popular Netflix series Gone Girls, which has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Frizell’s decision to embark on this new venture comes after he stepped down as editor of This Morning in February to care for his wife, Fiona Phillips, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2022.

Frizell’s departure from This Morning was an emotional affair, with colleagues and presenters, including Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson, paying tribute to his dedication and leadership during his tenure. Hammond, in particular, was visibly moved, stating that Frizell had “taken a chance” on her and co-presenter Josie Gibson, helping to launch their careers. Gibson also expressed her gratitude, saying that Frizell had believed in her when she didn’t even believe in herself.

The new podcast, This Much Is True Crime, promises to explore some of the most intriguing and complex crime stories of our time. In his announcement, Frizell hinted at the types of discussions that listeners could expect, stating: “If it’s in the headlines or the ratings, we’re talking about it. We start with Gone Girls. Not just a whodunnit, but a whydunnit?” The podcast is set to launch soon, although an exact date has yet to be confirmed.

Frizell’s decision to leave This Morning was not taken lightly, with the editor announcing his departure in November 2023, citing a need to prioritise his family commitments. His wife, Fiona Phillips, has been open about her struggles with Alzheimer’s, and Frizell has been devoted to supporting her throughout her diagnosis. In an interview last year, Frizell revealed that he would be stepping down from his role to focus on his family, stating: “Next year I’m expecting my family priorities to change, so I need to free up time for them… I love my team at This Morning and will miss them and the thrill of live telly, but it’s an always on, 24 hours a day, seven days a week commitment, and I won’t be able to do both.”

As Frizell settles into his new role as a podcast host, he will undoubtedly bring his wealth of experience and expertise to the true crime genre. This Much Is True Crime is set to offer a unique perspective on some of the most shocking and thought-provoking cases in recent history, with Frizell working alongside renowned criminologist Professor David Wilson. With his new venture, Frizell is sure to captivate audiences and provide a fresh insight into the world of true crime.

The news of Frizell’s new podcast comes as a welcome development for fans of true crime storytelling, and it will be interesting to see how he navigates this new chapter in his career. As he himself noted, “It’s been a privilege to lead truly great presenters and producers, between us we’ve turned out more than six thousand hours of live topical telly, that’s around 20,000 items.” With This Much Is True Crime, Frizell is set to bring his unique perspective and journalistic expertise to the world of podcasting. The Daily Mail reports that Frizell’s new podcast is set to become a must-listen for true crime enthusiasts.
