Bikers Face Mandatory Gear: Petition Pushes for Safety Crackdown

Bikers Face Mandatory Protective Clothing in New Petition

A new petition has been launched calling on the UK government to make it mandatory for motorcyclists to wear protective clothing while riding. The petition, started by 23-year-old Kimberley Thompson, comes in the wake of a serious crash involving her 19-year-old brother, Harry Pyett.

According to reports from the BBC, Pyett was riding along the B1078 in Hemingstone on Easter Monday when he skidded on gravel and suffered a badly broken femur and collarbone. Fortunately, Pyett was wearing a helmet and leather jacket at the time of the crash, which likely helped to reduce the severity of his injuries. The quick actions of two off-duty doctors who were on the scene also played a crucial role in assisting Pyett before paramedics and an air ambulance arrived.

The incident has had a profound impact on Thompson, who told the BBC that she felt "empty and useless" after hearing of the crash. She revealed that it will take months for her brother to fully recover from the ordeal, and that the experience has been a big wake-up call for him. "I had visions of my brother lying on the side of the road in a mangled heap,” she said. “I didn’t know if he was alive, and I was scared for his life. It just puts into perspective how delicate human life is – he was literally beaten by the ground."

Thompson has since launched a Change.org petition, which calls on the UK government to mandate protective motorcycle clothing for bikers. The petition requires 100,000 signatures in order to reach parliament, although at the time of writing, it had garnered just 100 signatures. As reported by Visordown.com, Thompson is hoping to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The idea of making protective motorcycle clothing mandatory is not a new one, as Visordown.com previously reported. However, given the challenges of policing such a law, it remains to be seen whether it could ever be effectively implemented. With an estimated 1.4 million bikers on UK roads, enforcing such a law would undoubtedly be a complex task, particularly when compared to efforts to clamp down on illegal motorcycle and e-bike use.

As Visordown.com notes, the petition is a timely reminder of the importance of road safety, and the need for motorcyclists to take steps to protect themselves while riding. The website has learned that Pyett’s ordeal has sparked a renewed debate about the role of protective clothing in reducing the risk of injury or death on UK roads.

The petition can be found on Change.org, and those wishing to show their support can sign it here.

Motorcyclists and road safety campaigners will be watching the progress of this petition closely, as Visordown.com continues to provide updates on this developing story.
