Can You Binge It? The New Drive to Survive-Inspired Series

F1: The Academy Docuseries Set to Premiere on Netflix

The highly anticipated docuseries, “F1: The Academy”, is set to premiere on Netflix on May 28, 2025, according to a report from PlanetF1.com. The series, produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, follows the all-female F1 Academy racing series and its seven-race 2024 season.

In a preview of the first episode, PlanetF1.com notes that the docuseries has a similar format to Netflix’s popular “Drive to Survive” series, distilling a full season of racing into a handful of episodes. The first episode introduces viewers to Lia Block and Bianca Bustamante, two drivers competing in the F1 Academy. Block, a second-generation racer, is an introvert who has found herself thrust into the spotlight, including an appearance on “Good Morning America”. On the other hand, Bustamante is a social media influencer and socialite who seems to be more comfortable in the public eye.

PlanetF1.com states that while the first episode is enjoyable, the narrative feels a bit wobbly. The series omits certain details about the drivers, such as Bustamante’s backstory, which could make for a compelling narrative thread. The report also notes that the series lacks the history and rapport between drivers that made “Drive to Survive” so compelling.

One of the main issues with “F1: The Academy” is that it asks the teenage drivers to be reality stars, which not everyone is cut out for. As PlanetF1.com points out, “not everyone is cut out to be a reality star — nor should they be.” The drivers are already under a lot of pressure competing in a high-stakes environment, and sharing their personal experiences with the camera could be detrimental to their careers.

The report from PlanetF1.com also highlights the challenges of creating a compelling narrative in the F1 Academy series. With drivers limited to two seasons in the series, there is not much time to develop relationships with fellow competitors or create years-long tensions. This results in a much flatter narrative than “Drive to Survive”.

Despite these challenges, PlanetF1.com believes that “F1: The Academy” is still worth watching, particularly for fans of racing. The series provides a unique look into the early stages of the European open-wheel ladder and showcases the talents of young female drivers.

As PlanetF1.com notes, “representation is critical in showing young girls that they can race cars, too.” The series has the potential to inspire a new generation of female drivers and provide a platform for them to share their stories.

In conclusion, “F1: The Academy” docuseries is set to premiere on Netflix on May 28, 2025. While it may not quite hit its mark, according to PlanetF1.com, it is still a worthwhile watch for fans of racing and those interested in the world of female motorsport. With its unique look into the early stages of the European open-wheel ladder and its focus on showcasing the talents of young female drivers, “F1: The Academy” is a series that is sure to generate interest and excitement.

The series will be available to stream on Netflix on May 28, 2025, and PlanetF1.com recommends it for anyone interested in racing and the world of female motorsport. As the report states, “F1: The Academy will be a worthwhile watch for race fans no matter what.”
