Aberdeen Goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov Speaks Out About Scottish Cup Final Disappointment
Aberdeen goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov has revealed that his family will be unable to attend the Scottish Cup Final due to visa restrictions. The weekend Hampden showcase against Celtic will be one of the biggest games of his life, but he will be without the support of his loved ones.
According to the Daily Record, Mitov has admitted that new travel rules have meant that his parents, Kostadinka and Veselin, did not have enough time to obtain a visa to visit the United Kingdom from Bulgaria.
“I don’t have anyone coming over to the final because unfortunately my mum and dad can’t make it due to the new rules with visas into the UK,” Mitov told the Daily Record. “It’s very frustrating because potentially it’s one of the biggest games of my life and my family are not able to be here.”
Mitov’s parents were able to visit him at Christmas, but they have not seen him play for Aberdeen in person. They will have to watch the game on television from Bulgaria.
“They were able to come over last Christmas when we played Kilmarnock away,” Mitov explained. “I told my dad he could drive my car there but he didn’t like the idea of driving on the other side of the road! For work and different reasons they haven’t been able to come over to watch a game at Pittodrie but we will have to bring them over next season.”
The Bulgarian international is used to living in the UK, having resided there for 12 years. He is confident that his team can cause an upset against Celtic, despite their recent form.
Treble-chasing Celtic are favourites to win the game, having recently lifted the Premiership trophy and defeated Aberdeen 5-1. However, Mitov believes that if Aberdeen can maintain their shape and be compact, they have the players to hurt Celtic.
“They are a very good team, they have a specific way of playing with runners in behind and good individuals,” Mitov said. “With Celtic, they can blow teams away very quickly. They can do that to anyone in the league. So it’s important to stick to the principles we’re good at. It’s all about being compact and trying to stop the spaces.”
Aberdeen have shown that they can rise to the occasion in one-off games, beating Rangers at Pittodrie and coming from behind to draw with Celtic. Mitov is hopeful that his team can repeat this performance in the Scottish Cup Final.
“It has to be about the team rather than individuals,” he said. “You have to have a team performance. Before I moved to Scotland I’d seen them in the Old Firm games so you know they’re a really good team. But playing against them, you realise how good they are. You want to test yourself against them, see how good you are and improve on the back of it.”
The Scottish Cup Final will take place on Saturday at Hampden Park, with Aberdeen looking to cause a major upset against Celtic. Despite the disappointment of not having his family present, Mitov is confident that his team can produce a strong performance and make their mark on the game.
