Channel 5’s Latest Psychological Thriller: The Game
Channel 5’s latest psychological thriller, The Game, has premiered on the network, boasting an impressive cast list and an intriguing storyline. The series, which airs every night from Monday, 12 to Thursday, 15 May, follows a retired detective haunted by a cold case who becomes convinced that he has stumbled upon the culprit in the form of a mysterious new neighbour.
According to a report by Yahoo News, the series stars Jason Watkins as retired detective Huw Miller, who is determined to finally put to rest the Ripton Stalker case that defined his career. However, Huw’s obsession threatens his relationships, his reputation, and his own grip on reality. Watkins is best known for his roles in Line Of Duty, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, The Crown, W1A, McDonald & Dodds, and Trollied.
The cast also includes Robson Green, who plays creepy new neighbour Patrick Harbottle. Patrick uses a distinctive phrase when he first meets Huw that was used by the Ripton Stalker during the unsuccessful search for him, leading Huw to believe he might finally have got his man. Green first found fame in Soldier Soldier and Casualty, later starring in Wire in the Blood and Strike Back. More recently, he has become known for his long-running role in Grantchester.
Sunetra Sarker plays Huw’s wife Alice, who believes her husband’s suspicions are nothing more than paranoia over a case that he can’t let go. Sarker had a prominent role in Casualty until 2024 and is also known for Brookside, No Angels, and Ackley Bridge.
The Game was filmed in a surprising location, with the Basque region of northern Spain posing as an English suburb. The series was shot around the cities of Bilbao and Vitoria, with many of the houses on set looking like modern British homes. According to Yahoo News, Sarker raved about her time in Spain, saying: “I loved it. I don’t think I had ever thought of the Basque country. It has literally been the biggest surprise of anywhere I’ve been in Europe. I will absolutely return.”
Robson Green also praised the region, telling The i Paper: “Oh my God, talk about a distinctive sense of place, identity, culture, history, and heritage that is still intact. It’s there in the Basque Country.” Despite the show’s stars talking about the region’s distinctive identity, viewers would be hard pressed to tell that they weren’t in the UK – in fact, even the weather looks a little drizzly as it was filmed in autumn. The show is set in the fictional town of Ripton, the place that was stalked by the elusive mystery criminal.
The Game continues on Channel 5 at 9pm tonight (13 May) and is available to stream on Channel 5. With its talented cast and intriguing storyline, this psychological thriller is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. As reported by Yahoo News, The Game is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
The series’ use of a surprising filming location adds to its intrigue, and the cast’s praise for the region only adds to its charm. With its blend of suspense, drama, and mystery, The Game is a compelling watch that will keep viewers guessing until the very end.
