The Chelsea Detective Continues to Intrigue Viewers on Acorn TV
Fans of the hit British drama “The Chelsea Detective” have been wondering if their favourite British detectives will return for a third season. The wait is now over, as the series launched its third season with a special Christmas episode last December. The entire third season is available to stream on Acorn TV, with four 90-minute episodes.
According to a report from The Herald Extra, the series follows quirky yet intelligent Detective Inspector Max Arnold (Adrian Scarborough) and Detective Sgt. Layla Walsh (Vanessa Emma) as they solve mysterious crimes in and around the picturesque neighbourhood of London known as Chelsea. Executive Producer Peter Fincham stated, “Chelsea is an endlessly fascinating place and Season 3 includes some of the most surprising stories we’ve told and introduces some great guest characters.” Acorn TV is part of the AMC Networks, which NPR describes as “Netflix for the Anglophile.”
The characters in the series are indeed interesting, but the cases they solve are even more intriguing. This season includes more personal stories besides the criminal investigations. There are some scenes with Max and his estranged wife, Astrid (Anamaria Marinca). They have had a rocky relationship over the previous two seasons; however, this season sees their complete separation. Another personal aspect to the detective team has D.S. Walsh dealing with a long-distance relationship with her partner, John, living in Exeter, 195 miles away from London. Can this relationship work? He visits her periodically; however, their time together is brief, and she now has to figure out how to have a relationship with his teenage daughter.
As reported by The Herald Extra, series regulars Sophie Stone (Ashley Wilton), Lucy Phelps (D.C. Jess Lombard) and Peter Bankolé (D.C. Connor Pollock) return for Season 3, along with Max’s Aunt Olivia, played by Frances Barber. She is definitely a unique character and brings the fun to Max’s life, if not also some stress. There is a humorous side story with Jess and Connor, as their performance reviews are just around the corner, and they want Max to know they are doing great jobs and contributing plenty of insight to the investigations, trying to one-up each other in the process.
This season has Ashley (the deaf coroner) using her sign language skills to help a suspect in the death of an antiquities dealer. This story involves a rare coin featuring the image of King Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936. Consequently, there were only a few coins struck but never released to the public, so the one found is definitely worth millions of pounds. Who would kill for it? The list of suspects grows daily. As noted by The Herald Extra, this season, an episode delves into diplomatic immunity, as one of the stories has a tie to the American embassy and the American ambassador. Another episode looks at how Max deals with a crime committed by the son of one of their own. This episode also involves a big businessman and his family as they maneuver around environmental issues in order to build their massive projects.
Viewers will be wracking their brains to figure out who the murderers are in this season, as every episode has many twists and turns. Once again, D.I. Arnold and D.S. Walsh are searching for clues and solving crimes in the Chelsea neighbourhood, which in itself is very picturesque, until you add the grim and grisly crimes. For fans of the series, Season 4 is scheduled to go into production later this year to be released in 2026. The four episodes of Season 3 stream on Acorn TV, which is part of the AMC family and streams popular mainly British shows. The previous seasons are also available on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
In an interview with The Herald Extra, it was noted that Arnold lives on a little houseboat on the Chelsea Cheyne Walk next to the Thames. It’s a little beat up but he’s happy there, having moved there after his marital separation. Max is a quirky fellow who rides his bike to and from work and has many odd habits, but deep down he has a good heart and is committed to solving crimes.
As reported by The Herald Extra, fans of “The Chelsea Detective” can continue to enjoy the series, as it has been renewed for a fourth season. The show has gained a loyal following on Acorn TV, and its unique blend of mystery, crime, and personal storylines has made it a standout in the world of British television. With its picturesque setting and intriguing cases, “The Chelsea Detective” is sure to continue to captivate audiences for years to come.
