Former Rangers Manager Philippe Clement Set to Take Charge of Sparta Prague
According to reports from ruik.cz as cited by the Glasgow Times, former Rangers manager Philippe Clement is set to take charge of Czech club Sparta Prague. The news comes after Clement’s departure from Rangers in April, following a 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren.
The Glasgow Times understands that Clement is "heading" to Prague to take charge of Sparta, with the club expected to "officially confirm" his appointment "soon". This move marks a new chapter in Clement’s managerial career, having led Rangers into the quarter-finals of the Europa League and securing a memorable 3-2 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.
Clement’s departure from Rangers paved the way for Barry Ferguson to take over as interim head coach until the end of last season. However, it has since been confirmed that Ferguson will not be getting the permanent gig, with the Ibrox side still on the hunt for a new permanent manager.
Meanwhile, Sparta Prague finished fourth in the Czech top flight last season, remaining winless in their final six games of the campaign. The club’s boss, Lars Friis, was sacked following a 3-1 cup final defeat to Olomouc, which left them trophyless for the 2024/25 season.
The news of Clement’s potential appointment at Sparta Prague comes on the back of a significant development at Rangers. On Friday, the club confirmed that a consortium led by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh had purchased a majority stake in the club, with approval from the Scottish FA. The consortium will chart a new strategic vision for the club’s future, prioritising on-pitch performance and long-term financial sustainability.
As quoted in the Glasgow Times, the new leadership has committed to invest £20 million into the club at this time, which will be subject to shareholder approval at the General Meeting on 23 June 2025. This investment is expected to have a significant impact on the club’s future prospects, both on and off the pitch.
The Glasgow Times reported earlier that Clement’s departure from Rangers was a result of a poor run of form, which ultimately led to his sacking. However, it appears that the Belgian manager is set to get back into the game quickly, with Sparta Prague awaiting his arrival.
The appointment of Clement at Sparta Prague is expected to be confirmed in the coming days, marking a new chapter in the club’s history. As reported by the Glasgow Times, Clement’s managerial experience and expertise will undoubtedly be an asset to the Czech club, as they look to improve their fortunes in the upcoming season.
