Argyle Appoint Tom Cleverley as New Head Coach

In a significant move, Argyle Football Club has announced the appointment of Tom Cleverley as their new Head Coach on a three-year contract. According to a statement released by the club, as reported by PAFC, Cleverley joins Argyle from Sky Bet Championship side Watford, where he led the team to a 14th-place finish in his first full season in charge before departing in May.

Cleverley, 35, is highly regarded throughout the football community as both a coach and a player. He will begin work immediately, ahead of the upcoming League One season, and will oversee the squad’s preparations when the players return for pre-season at the end of next week. The club’s Chairman, Simon Hallett, expressed his delight in securing Cleverley’s services, stating that he was the club’s number one target for the role.

As PAFC reports, Hallett said: "Ever since Miron’s departure, and knowing Tom was available, we identified him straight away as the perfect person to be our next Head Coach and targeted him immediately. When we spoke to him he was completely aligned with the vision and ambitions of the club and it was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us." Hallett also praised Cleverley’s youth, passion, and experience, highlighting his impressive work at Watford.

Argyle Chief Executive, Andrew Parkinson, also welcomed Cleverley’s appointment, revealing that the club had received significant interest from prospective candidates. However, Parkinson emphasised that Cleverley was always the preferred choice, stating: "We were inundated with interest from prospective candidates, which shows how exciting this project is. But, throughout the process, it was clear that Tom was the perfect person to take the club forward." Parkinson also expressed his excitement at seeing Cleverley build a squad and style of play that will enable Argyle to challenge at the top end of League One this season.

The club has confirmed that discussions regarding Cleverley’s backroom staff are ongoing, with announcements to be made in due course. As PAFC notes, Cleverley’s appointment has generated significant optimism among fans, who will be eager to see the impact he has on the talented squad at his disposal.

Cleverley’s experience and reputation as a coach made him an attractive proposition for Argyle, who are looking to make a strong impression in League One this season. As reported by PAFC, the club’s hierarchy is confident that Cleverley will play a key role in helping them achieve their long-term plans, and his appointment has been met with widespread approval from the Argyle faithful. With Cleverley at the helm, Argyle will look to build on their momentum and push for a successful season.
