CM Calls for Overhaul of Lairai Zatras’ Inefficient System

System at Lairai Zatra Site Needs to be More Efficient, Says CM

A recent incident at the Shree Lairai Devi Jatra in Shirgao, Goa, has brought attention to the need for improved safety measures at such events. The Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, has stated that the system in place at the zatra site needs to be more efficient to prevent such tragedies in the future.

According to reports from The Goan, the Chief Minister visited the family of Surya Naykar, who lost his life in the stampede, and consoled them, assuring them of all possible help. The incident, which occurred in the wee hours of Saturday, claimed six lives and injured nearly 80 people. The Chief Minister expressed his grief over the incident, stating that it was "very unfortunate" and that the temple administration and devotees had to pay proper attention to the conduct of the zatra.

The Chief Minister also announced that the government will take special steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. He stated that a special investigation team has been formed to probe into the incident and that they will submit their report in a few days’ time. The government has already announced an assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives, which will be given to them after twelve days.

As reported by The Goan, the Chief Minister also emphasised the need for devotees and dhonds to take proper precautions during the fair. He stated that the administration will now pay more attention to this and take important decisions to ensure that such incidents never happen. The Chief Minister became emotional after meeting the family of Naykar and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died.

The Goa Governor, P S Sreedharan Pillai, also visited the families of those who were killed during the Shree Lairai Devi Jatra. He expressed his grief over the incident, stating that it was "beyond human expectation". The Governor, who was on an official visit to Kerala, had cut-short his stay and returned to the State on Saturday evening. He then rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital to meet the injured persons.

As per The Goan‘s report, the Governor assured the families of the deceased that the state and central governments are trying their best to help the victims. He stated that the state government has already announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of those who died and that if something more is required, it would be done. The government can do justice to the injured victims by making available all necessary medical help, the Governor added.

Other leaders, including Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and MLA Premendra Shet, also visited the families of the deceased and consoled them. They assured them of all possible cooperation and assistance. The incident has brought attention to the need for improved safety measures at such events, and the government has assured that it will take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, and the government has been urged to take immediate action to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. As The Goan reports, the government has been working to provide assistance to the families of the victims and to ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical help.

The Lairai zatra, which is a significant event in Goa, attracts a large number of devotees every year. However, the incident has highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and safety measures at such events. The government’s efforts to improve the system in place at the zatra site will be crucial in preventing such incidents in the future.
