CNA Urges Romanian Broadcasters to Respect Electoral Campaign Regulations
The National Council for Audiovisual (CNA) has called on Romanian broadcasters to adhere to the legal provisions regarding the electoral campaign for the presidential elections, which took place on Sunday. According to a statement released by the CNA, broadcasters were urged to refrain from airing messages, images, and comments with electoral content related to the two candidates.
In a post on Facebook, the CNA stated, "Întrunit în şedinţa publică, Consiliul Naţional al Audiovizualului solicită radiodifuzorilor să respecte dispoziţiile legale în vigoare privind campania electorală pentru alegerea preşedintelui României şi să nu difuzeze mesaje, imagini şi comentarii cu conţinut electoral referitoare la cei doi candidaţi" (Translation: "In a public meeting, the National Council for Audiovisual urges broadcasters to respect the legal provisions in force regarding the electoral campaign for the election of the President of Romania and not to broadcast messages, images, and comments with electoral content related to the two candidates").
The CNA also announced that it would monitor the situation in real-time throughout the day, through its specialized departments, and would sanction any deviations from the legal provisions. The council reminded that, according to Article 10 of CNA Decision No. 86 of February 25, 2025, regarding the rules for the conduct of the electoral campaign in audiovisual media for the presidential elections in 2025, "cu 24 de ore înainte de începerea votării şi până la închiderea urnelor sunt interzise difuzarea oricăror mesaje şi comentarii cu conţinut electoral, a emisiunilor şi spoturilor publicitare electorale, precum şi invitarea sau prezentarea în programe a candidaţilor şi a reprezentanţilor acestora şi ai partidelor politice, alianţelor politice, alianţelor electorale şi ai organizaţiilor cetăţenilor aparţinând minorităţilor naţionale care susţin candidaţi, cu excepţia situaţiilor prevăzute la art. 11" (Translation: "24 hours before the start of voting and until the closure of the polls, the broadcast of any messages and comments with electoral content, electoral advertising spots and programs, as well as the invitation or presentation of candidates and their representatives and those of political parties, political alliances, electoral alliances, and organizations of citizens belonging to national minorities that support candidates, are prohibited, except in situations provided for in Article 11").
