Napoli have secured their fourth Serie A title, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history. The team, led by manager Antonio Conte, sealed the championship with a 2-0 win over Cagliari on Friday night.
According to a report by The Guardian, Conte had urged the city to remain calm and not celebrate the title prematurely, saying, “I don’t want to see flags here and there with numbers on.” However, as the final whistle blew, fans erupted in joy, waving giant white sheets with a large black “4” emblazoned on them, symbolising the team’s fourth scudetto.
The celebrations began in earnest as green and red flares were set off, creating the colours of the Italian flag, which appear on a scudetto badge. Conte, who was watching from a private box due to a touchline ban, was seen surrendering to the moment, surrounded by thousands of fans gathered outside the sold-out Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Napoli’s title win was not expected to happen so quickly, with the team waiting 33 years between their second and third Serie A titles. The manager who ended that drought, Luciano Spalletti, collected his winner’s medal and immediately departed in his newly repainted Fiat Panda.
The Guardian reports that few expected Napoli to be contenders this season, especially after the departure of top scorer Victor Osimhen and standout performer Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, the team, led by Conte, showed consistency and single-mindedness, occupying first place for more than half of the campaign.
Unlike their title rivals, Napoli began the season without European distractions, exiting the Coppa Italia in the last 16
