Corfu Holiday Hell: Brit Tourist Slams ‘No English Food’

British Tourist Labels Corfu Holiday a ‘Nightmare’ Due to Lack of English Food

A British holidaymaker has spoken out about her disastrous holiday in Corfu, branding it a ‘nightmare’ due to the lack of English food available at her all-inclusive resort. Susan Edwards, 69, from Westerhope, paid £750 for a seven-night stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel with her family, but claimed the trip was ‘horrendous from the minute we got there’.

According to The Daily Mail, Ms Edwards stated that the hotel’s dining options were severely limited, with no English breakfast staples such as bacon or sausage available. "On the first morning, I could have toast, a hard-boiled egg, or something in sauce. There was no bacon," she said. The next day’s breakfast was equally unimpressive, with mozzarella and sliced tomatoes on offer, but no hot bacon or sausage. The only day they managed to get chips was "one day out of the whole lot".

The pensioner, who was travelling with her cousins, aged 77 and 78, her daughter, 30, and second cousin, 50, expressed her frustration at the lack of variety in the hotel’s cuisine. "There was fish, sardines and rice – I was sick to death of looking at rice," Ms Edwards said. "There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked. One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn’t eat that. It’s the worst holiday I’ve ever been on."

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Ms Edwards also criticised the hotel’s drink options, stating that she did not enjoy a single drink on her holiday due to the limited selection. The hotel offered wine, lager, ouzo, or brandy, as well as soft drinks, but bottled water cost €1.50. Ms Edwards claimed that she would normally drink bottled lager or one Bacardi and Coke, but this would have cost her €9.

The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel has since responded to Ms Edwards’ claims, stating that her allegations are "inaccurate, exaggerated, and in many cases entirely false information". According to The Daily Mail, the hotel claimed that their buffet is "rich and diverse every single day, offering fresh salads, fruits, vegetables, cold and hot dishes that meet a variety of European and Mediterranean tastes". The hotel also stated that the idea that they served "only rice and sardines" is simply false.

The hotel, which is a four-star resort with panoramic views over the Ionian sea, has advertised itself as offering "excellent services" and an "unforgettable experience". However, Ms Edwards claimed that she was unable to enjoy the hotel’s private beach due to its steep location, which made it difficult to access. She also criticised the lack of entertainment at the hotel, stating that it was "stuck there in the middle of nowhere".

In response to Ms Edwards’ claims, The Daily Mail reported that the hotel stated she was given a second key for her room, but it was later revoked when it was discovered that she used it to leave the air conditioning running 24/7. The hotel also claimed that Ms Edwards was "looking for excuses" and even complained about the weather.

Corfu is a popular holiday hotspot for Brits, with nearly a million visiting the Greek island every year. However, Ms Edwards’ experience serves as a cautionary tale for those planning their holiday. As reported by The Daily Mail, the hotel has since stated that they have been contacted by several other hotels that have had similar experiences with Ms Edwards, who they claim has a history of making complaints.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel has a history of providing good service, but in this instance, it appears that their offering fell short of Ms Edwards’ expectations. It remains to be seen how this will affect the hotel’s reputation, but for now, it serves as a reminder for holidaymakers to research their resort thoroughly before booking.
