Czech Arms Boom: Defence Industry Thrives as Car Production Dwindles

Czech Republic’s Arms Industry Experiences Golden Age as Automotive Sector Declines

The Czech Republic’s arms industry is experiencing a surge in growth, with production and profits increasing significantly over the past three years. According to a report by Telegrafi, the industry’s share of the economy could increase several times in the coming years, from its current level of about one percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Czech Republic has long been known for its automotive industry, with the country producing 1.4 million vehicles in 2024, an increase of almost 4% compared to the previous year. However, production fell sharply by 7.1% in the first quarter of 2025, mainly due to lower demand in Western Europe. This decline has led to concerns about the future of the industry, with some experts suggesting that the arms industry could become a new driving force for the Czech economy.

Ales Rodi of the Center for Economic and Market Analysis told Czech Radio that the arms industry has significant potential for growth. "We see demand in the arms industry a decade or even fifteen years from now. We see empty warehouses. What we produce is not being cooled and bought," Rodi said. Danuse Nerudova, former rector of Mendel University in Brno and member of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee, agrees that the defense industry can become a new engine of the Czech and European economies. "The defense industry can utilize the supply capacities and workforce freed up by the automotive sector, boost economic growth and strengthen our security at the same time," Nerudova told Deutsche Welle.

However, not all experts are convinced that the arms industry can replace the automotive sector as the driving force of the Czech economy. Petr Zahradnik, an adviser to the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, is more skeptical. "Czech arms factories are living in a golden age, it’s true. Their capacities are expanding, Czech defense companies are expanding their capital in the most advanced parts of the world," Zahradnik said. "But I don’t think they will replace the automotive sector as the driving force of the Czech economy."

The Czech Republic has a long history of arms production, dating back to before World War I. Between the two world wars and afterwards, Czechoslovakia was one of the world’s leading arms producers and exporters. The country’s arms industry was severely affected by the end of the Warsaw Pact and the confrontation in Europe, as well as the general disarmament in the early 1990s. The dissolution of Czechoslovakia into two separate states in 1992 also led to a split in the defense industry, with the production of tanks and heavy machinery remaining mainly in Slovakia, while the aircraft industry, the production of light weapons, ammunition, radar systems, and small arms remained in the Czech Republic.

The war in Ukraine has provided a significant boost to the Czech arms industry, with production increasing by hundreds of percent per year. Forty percent of the output of Czech arms factories is destined for Ukraine, where joint ventures have also been established. In total, up to 90% of production is exported. At the same time, however, purchases by the Czech military are increasing. Last year, Czech defense spending reached two percent of GDP for the first time. Prime Minister Petr Fiale has announced that this figure should reach three percent within a few years.

According to Telegrafi, the Czech arms industry’s growth is expected to continue in the coming years, driven by increasing demand for military equipment and a growing focus on defense spending. The industry’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances and capitalize on new opportunities will be crucial in determining its long-term success. As the Czech Republic continues to navigate the challenges of the global economy, the arms industry is likely to play an increasingly important role in the country’s economic development.

The Czech Republic’s arms industry has a rich history, and its current growth is a testament to the country’s expertise in this field. With a strong foundation in place, the industry is well-positioned to continue growing and evolving in response to changing global demands. As reported by Telegrafi, the industry’s future looks bright, with many experts predicting significant growth and expansion in the years to come.
