Deacon Blue’s Jim Prime Hospitalized with Serious Illness

Deacon Blue Keyboard Player Jim Prime Seriously Ill in Hospital

The Scottish band Deacon Blue has announced that keyboard player Jim Prime, 64, is seriously ill and undergoing care in hospital. Prime, who helped form the band in 1985 alongside Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond, Ewen Vernal, and the late Graeme Kelling, has given the band his full blessing to continue with their scheduled tour later this year.

According to a statement issued by the band, Prime’s specific condition has not been disclosed, but he has encouraged his bandmates to press on with their plans, which include two nights at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow in October. The statement, which was released on Wednesday, read: "We wanted to share some news with you about our brother, Jim. Unfortunately, he is seriously ill and undergoing care in hospital. We would like you to join us in wishing him well and to share your love with him."

The band, who have been a staple of the Scottish music scene for over three decades, have a busy touring schedule ahead of them, with dates scheduled throughout the UK and Europe. Despite Prime’s illness, the band has confirmed that they will continue with their tour plans, with the possibility of a temporary replacement for Prime. The statement continued: "We spoke to Jim yesterday about Deacon Blue’s plans for the rest of the year, and he encouraged us to continue with love in our hearts and with his full blessing that his shows go ahead, even if it means replacing the irreplaceable James Miller Prime for the time being."

The news of Prime’s illness has sent shockwaves through the music industry, with fans and fellow musicians alike sending their well-wishes to the ailing keyboard player. The band has thanked the medical staff caring for Prime, saying: "Together with Jim’s family, we want to thank all the nurses, doctors and ICU staff for their ongoing care, professionalism and compassion." This sentiment was echoed by The National, who reported on the story earlier.

Deacon Blue has had a long and successful career, with hits like "Dignity", "Raintown Boys", and "America" becoming staples of 90s Britpop. The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years, but Prime has remained a constant presence, providing keyboards and backing vocals. His contributions to the band’s music have been invaluable, and his illness has come as a shock to fans and bandmates alike.

As news of Prime’s illness continues to spread, fans are rallying around the band and sending their best wishes for a speedy recovery. The band’s decision to continue with their tour plans, despite Prime’s absence, is a testament to their dedication to their music and their fans. The National will continue to provide updates on Prime’s condition and Deacon Blue’s tour plans as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, fans can show their support for Prime and the band by attending their upcoming tour dates, with all proceeds going towards supporting Prime’s recovery. As The National reported, the band’s statement ended with a message of thanks to their fans, saying: "We would like you to join us in wishing him well and to share your love with him." This message has been echoed by fans and fellow musicians alike, who are all sending their best wishes for Prime’s recovery.
