Dizzee Rascal’s Unscheduled Margate Gig Postponed Amid Concerns
A last-minute ‘pull-up’ gig by UK rapper Dizzee Rascal on Margate’s King’s Steps has been postponed just hours after it was announced. The award-winning artist had taken to Facebook Reels to promote the free event, but it has since been cancelled due to filming taking place in the town.
According to reports, concerns had been raised by local councillors and police regarding the event, which was set to attract a large crowd. Margate councillor Rob Yates had expressed concerns about the event, stating that inviting 700,000 people to Margate Steps to listen to Dizzee Rascal without any planning was not a great idea. As reported by The Isle of Thanet News, Cllr Yates said: “Today Dreamland have realised that inviting 700,000 people to Margate steps to listen to Dizzee Rascal without any planning was not a great idea. Whose fault was it? Either Dreamland or their promoter or Dizzee Rascal’s team. It doesn’t really matter. This was clearly a ticket stunt for the event at Dreamland in August and as a ward councillor I’m glad that Dreamland have cancelled the event, especially after the tragic incident in July last year. Events need to be appropriately managed.”
Dreamland operations director Shane Guy confirmed that the venue had not organised the free ‘pop-up’ and would be asking for it to be cancelled. The postponement comes as Dizzee Rascal prepares for his upcoming show at Dreamland on Friday, August 29, alongside British lyricist Mike Skinner of The Streets, and DJ Badger.
The Isle of Thanet News understands that the event was likely a promotional stunt for the upcoming show at Dreamland. However, the lack of planning and potential for large crowds raised concerns among local authorities. A spokesperson for Dreamland said that they were not involved in the organisation of the event and had asked for it to be cancelled.
The incident highlights the importance of proper planning and management of events, especially in popular tourist destinations like Margate. As Cllr Yates noted, events need to be appropriately managed to ensure public safety. The postponement of the gig demonstrates that the organisers and local authorities are taking steps to prevent any potential risks.
Dizzee Rascal’s upcoming show at Dreamland is expected to draw a large crowd, and it remains to be seen how the venue will manage the event. Fans of the artist will be eagerly awaiting the show, which promises to be an exciting event. As reported by The Isle of Thanet News, the postponement of the ‘pull-up’ gig has sparked a mixed reaction among fans and locals, with some expressing disappointment and others welcoming the decision.
In a statement, a spokesperson for The Isle of Thanet News confirmed that the event had been postponed due to concerns over public safety and the lack of planning. The spokesperson added that the event was not organised by Dreamland and that they had asked for it to be cancelled.
The postponement of Dizzee Rascal’s unscheduled Margate gig serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible event planning and management. As the town prepares for the upcoming summer events, local authorities and event organisers will be working closely to ensure that all events are properly managed and executed.
