Ellen DeGeneres Struggles with UK Country Life After Fleeing US
A recent social media post by Ellen DeGeneres has provided a glimpse into her new life in the UK, where she has relocated with her wife, Portia de Rossi. The former talk show host took to Instagram to share a video of herself attempting to mow the lawn at her new home, with hilarious results.
According to a report, DeGeneres appeared to be struggling with the task, initially successfully mowing a small flat portion of her lawn before encountering difficulties when trying to drive the mower up a hill. A caption on the video, which was shot by de Rossi, read “How it started” and “How it ended,” with the latter showing DeGeneres sitting on the mower as someone assists her by pushing the machine from behind.
As reported by Fox News, DeGeneres captioned the video on Instagram, saying “Portia thought it would be fun to film my first time on the mower. … She was right.” The Hollywood couple first made headlines when they reportedly moved to the UK in November 2024, following Donald Trump’s election as President.
As previously reported by Fox News, the couple sold one of their homes in Montecito, California, in August 2024 and sold their second home in the city in March. A source told People that DeGeneres was “in England house hunting in the beginning of October” and “ended up finding a house that she loved and purchased it shortly after.”
DeGeneres is not the only comedian to have left the US after Trump’s election. Rosie O’Donnell shared on TikTok in March 2025 that she had moved to Ireland on January 15, five days before Trump’s inauguration. In the video, O’Donnell explained that she “was someone who never thought I would move to another country,” but thought it was best for her and her young child.
When speaking with US Weekly in April, O’Donnell shared that she was “shocked” to find out the reason DeGeneres chose to flee the country. “I’ve never really known Ellen to say anything political in her life, so I was surprised to read that she left because of President Trump. Like, that shocked me, actually,” O’Donnell said.
As quoted by Fox News, O’Donnell added, “I’ve been a political person my whole life. Not better or worse. It’s just a different way to be in the world. I was very clear about the reason why I was leaving, and I don’t think it came as a surprise to anyone. We’re not really in each other’s worlds, and it’s been kind of awkward, but you know what? I wish her the best. I wish that she has peace and love in her life and that she is OK.”
The move has seemingly brought mixed results for DeGeneres, who has been spotted out with friends in the Cotswolds, a countryside region in England. However, her foray into lawn mowing has shown that adjusting to country life may not be as easy as she thought.
