Germany’s Darts Duo Delight in PDC World Cup of Darts Victory
Germany’s Michael van Gerwen and Maik Schindler have progressed to the quarter-finals of the PDC World Cup of Darts, following a thrilling 8-5 victory over England’s Luke Humphries and Luke Woodhouse. The German duo, ranked 18th and 28th in the world respectively, were full of praise for their performance, with Schindler stating, “We believed in ourselves and we put in a solid performance, and the double 16s that Ricardo threw were so important,” reports the BBC.
The pair’s victory was a significant upset, with England’s duo underperforming in the eyes of former BDO world championship finalist Bobby George. “When you play in pairs, it’s a different sort of game – you’re not used to the gap between throws,” he said. However, Schindler remained optimistic about Germany’s chances, adding, “We are delighted to go through. German darts is in good shape right now and we will continue to push forward.”
The German duo will next face Australia’s Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta, who defeated Argentina 8-1 in their second-round match. Whitlock, a former World Championship finalist, stated that England’s defeat had not been a surprise to him, while his partner Heta added, “They probably relied on each other, thinking ‘Oh, he’ll do the business’. But the conditions weren’t great. The crowd was all for Germany so it was probably brutal out there for them, but they will take it as another learning curve and probably get stronger – unfortunately for the rest of us.”
The PDC World Cup of Darts has seen several upsets and thrilling matches so far, with the Netherlands’ Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen advancing with an 8-0 whitewash of Scotland’s Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. Wales’ two-time winners Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton were 8-2 victors over the Philippines, while Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney, the fourth seeds, defeated South Africa 8-2 to set up a last-eight tie against 2019 runners-up Republic of Ireland.
According to the BBC, the quarter-final draw is as follows: Germany will face Australia, Northern Ireland will take on Republic of Ireland, Wales will face Hong Kong, and the Netherlands will battle it out with the Czech Republic. The competition is heating up, and fans are eagerly anticipating the next round of matches.
In related news, three-time BDO world champion Glen Durrant told Sky that the walk-on for England, you could barely hear yourself, it was intimidating, a partisan crowd. However, he also noted that the Lukes will learn lessons from their experience. As the competition continues, it remains to be seen which teams will emerge victorious and claim the coveted title.
