Greece’s Eurovision Entry: A Musical Tribute to the Homeland
In a recent review of this year’s Eurovision entries, One Europe took a closer look at Greece’s contribution to the competition: "Asteromáta" by Klavdia. The song’s distinctly Greek flavour and lyrics that evoke a sense of kinship with the homeland have sparked interest among Eurovision fans.
According to One Europe, "there’s no mistaking where this one’s from. Yeah, it could be Cyprus, but it’s Greece who has been the more musically adventurous of the two at Eurovision, and so it is too this year." The publication notes that the national flavour of the music is complemented by lyrics that frame the relationship of the displaced and the refugee.
Klavdia’s performance of "Asteromáta" has been praised for its elegance and poise. One Europe observes that "Klavdia cuts a distinctive figure, her oversized glasses inviting an inevitable comparison with one of Greece’s most famous singers, Nana Mouskouri. She performs this beautifully, with grace and elegance aplenty."
Despite appreciating the song’s merits, One Europe admits that they feel "little kinship with it. Of course, it’s not speaking to me for its support – the true target is a widely dispersed diaspora which in a televote only semifinal might just be enough to qualify." The publication concludes that "this kind of song will always have a limited audience."
In their assessment, One Europe awards "Asteromáta" 7 points, noting that while they enjoy hearing it, there’s nothing that urges them to vote or revisit the song. As the publication remarks, "I would have lapped this kind of thing up in the 90s when I was unable to get enough of distinctive female soloists, but as much as I enjoy hearing it, there’s nothing really urging me to vote, or to skip back and hear it again."
