British Wrestler Mariah May Set to Join WWE
According to reports, a former world champion is readying herself to make a splash on screens in the WWE. Mariah May, a 26-year-old Londoner, is highly thought of as a former AEW Women’s Champion and the winner of the 2024 Owen Hart Cup. She was already renowned for the waves made on wrestling’s independent scene and having worked as a fashion model, May even modelled merchandise for WWE aged 18.
May’s successful spell in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been well documented, with the Londoner nicknamed "The Glamour" winning the world title in a glorious homecoming at Wembley Stadium, knocking off Toni Storm in her home city at 2024’s All In London. It was gold she went on to hold until she was defeated by Storm when the two met again at Grand Slam Australia in February, failing in a rematch at Revolution in March.
The news of May’s potential switch to WWE comes after AEW removed her profile from their website’s roster page, historically a surefire sign of a talent’s time there coming to an end. Pro Wrestling Insider’s Mike Johnson commented, "We can confirm that we’ve heard from WWE sources over the last week that she’s expected to start there in the near future."
Fightful, too, have confirmed that report and added that: "[WWE] immediately had interest in her when they learned she was available," but equally confirmed that nothing at that time had been signed. The rapid rise of May in the wrestling world isn’t without parallels – and British ones at that. Former WWE icon and fellow Brit Paige recently left AEW, where she’d wrestled as Saraya and battled against May in multiple matches.
Paige, a Norwich native, made a huge splash when she won the Divas title on her main roster debut in 2014 off the back of a successful independent career in the UK and a run in NXT. In a landmark achievement May would go on to emulate, Saraya also won big at Wembley Stadium. At All In London 2023, she was crowned AEW Women’s Champion after beating Storm, Britt Baker and Hikaru Shida in a fatal four-way match in front of a crowd of more than 70,000.
Should May follow in Paige’s footsteps and formally pen terms with WWE, she’ll be bringing a determinedness to graft. In a 2021 interview, May said, "With WWE I actually modelled their shirts. They sent me their merch to model, so I think WWE knew who I was when I was like 18. So, when I started training and stuff, I know they were watching me, and I just worked really, really hard, and I just – I sacrificed everything just to really put the time into wrestling. That pays off. And then, obviously, I was lucky enough to get a tryout, which was just the most amazing experience ever."
The news of May’s potential signing with WWE will be met with excitement from fans, who have been following her journey in AEW. According to talksport.com, May’s hard work and dedication have finally paid off, with WWE set to offer her a contract. As reported by the same source, May’s profile was recently removed from AEW’s website, indicating that her time with the company has come to an end.
As talksport.com previously reported, May has been making waves in the wrestling world with her impressive skills and charismatic persona. With her signing with WWE, fans can expect to see her compete at the highest level and potentially become a major star in the company. Only time will tell if May will be able to replicate Paige’s success in WWE, but one thing is certain – she has the talent and determination to make a lasting impact.
The addition of May to WWE’s roster would be a significant boost to the company’s women’s division, which has been thriving in recent years. With talents like Drew McIntyre, Pete Dunne, Becky Lynch, Sheamus, and Pretty Deadly already on board, WWE has a strong representation of British wrestlers. May’s signing would further strengthen the company’s connection to the UK and Ireland, and fans are eagerly awaiting the confirmation of her move to WWE.
As reported by talksport.com, May’s background in modelling and her experience working with WWE’s merchandise team could also prove to be an asset in her potential role with the company. With her charisma and in-ring skills, May has the potential to become a fan favourite and a major player in WWE’s women’s division.
The news of May’s potential signing with WWE has generated significant buzz among fans, who are eagerly awaiting the official announcement. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is certain – Mariah May is a talented wrestler who is ready to take the WWE by storm.
