Memorial Tournament Leaderboard: Ben Griffin Takes the Lead
The first round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club has come to a close, with Ben Griffin emerging as the leader. According to The Columbus Dispatch, Griffin shot an impressive 7 under 65, despite hitting two balls in the water.
Griffin’s round included an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 hole, which he shared with his playing partner, Shane Lowry. The duo’s strong performance was a highlight of the day, with Griffin taking a two-stroke lead into the clubhouse. Collin Morikawa, a two-time major winner, is two shots back of Griffin after carding a 5-under 67.
As The Columbus Dispatch reports, Morikawa’s round featured six birdies and just one bogey, with his only misstep coming on the 15th hole. The 2020 Workday Charity Open winner at Muirfield Village, Morikawa has finished second at the Memorial in both 2022 and 2024.
Lowry, Keegan Bradley, and Nick Taylor are three shots behind Griffin, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shot a 2 under 70. Scheffler, the defending champion, birdied the 14th and 16th holes to get to 2 under par for the tournament.
The Columbus Dispatch notes that several big names had disappointing rounds, including Justin Thomas (80) and Justin Rose (78). Max Homa birdied the final two holes to finish with a 4 under 68 and is third behind Griffin and Morikawa.
Griffin’s 7-under 65 remains the score to beat, but Morikawa’s strong round has him in contention. As The Columbus Dispatch quotes Morikawa, "Honestly, I woke up today kind of not knowing how the swing was going to produce… I spent a couple hours on the range after the pro-am yesterday and was just trying to find something."
The Memorial Tournament continues on Friday, with tee times ranging from 7:50 a.m. to 2 p.m. The field of 72 golfers will compete for a share of a $20 million purse, with the champion’s share being $4 million.
