Star Wars: Starfighter Set for May 2027 Release with Ryan Gosling and Director Shawn Levy
A new Star Wars film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, has been announced, with a release date of May 28, 2027. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the film will star Ryan Gosling and be directed by Shawn Levy, who has been developing the project since 2022.
The announcement was made at a panel at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan, where Gosling and Levy took to the stage to discuss the film. Gosling praised the script, saying, "The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters," as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn."
Levy, who collaborated with writer Jonathan Tropper on films such as This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, will helm the film, which is a standalone movie that will be unconnected to the so-called Skywalker Saga. The events of Starfighter take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Gosling, who has been a fan of Star Wars since childhood, joked about his mom still having his childhood Star Wars bedsheets, saying, "She still has them, obviously," as per The Hollywood Reporter. "Naturally, she thought that it might be something that the fans would appreciate, but I suspect that she just sort of wants to justify years of hoarding." He added that his childhood fascination with Star Wars likely framed his idea of what a movie even was.
Production on Starfighter is set to start this fall, with Levy and Gosling keeping plot details under wraps. However, there have been reports of a search for a teenage actor to play opposite Gosling’s character, as well as a male and female villain. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film will be a new adventure, set in a period of time that hasn’t been explored yet.
The release date of Starfighter puts it in direct competition with another highly anticipated Disney film, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to open on May 7, 2027.
