Matt Goss Opens Up About Fractured Relationship with Twin Brother Luke
The tumultuous relationship between Matt Goss and his twin brother Luke Goss has been well-documented over the years. The siblings, who rose to fame in the late 1980s as the pop band Bros, have had a long and troubled history, with the brothers frequently falling out and making up. However, in a recent interview with the i, Matt Goss revealed that he and his brother are once again no longer on speaking terms.
According to the i, Matt Goss, 57, believes that their mutual experiences of fame have "completely f***ed" their relationship. The brothers’ rise to fame was swift and intense, with Bros selling 16 million records and performing to millions of fans around the world. However, their success was also marred by tragedy, including the death of their sister Carolyn in a car crash when she was just 18, and the death of their mother, who died "violently" when her stomach ruptured in front of Matt.
The brothers’ relationship was further explored in the 2018 Bafta-winning documentary After the Screaming Stops, which followed their attempts to heal their fractured relationship ahead of their comeback shows at the O2 Arena in London. As the i reported, the documentary addressed the impact of their family tragedies on the band, as well as their struggles with fame.
In his interview with the i, Matt Goss expressed his regret at the current state of their relationship, saying: "He’s still the love of my life and my best mate… I still don’t understand any of it. Honestly, I don’t. I feel, I know I’ve been a good brother." Matt also expressed his hope that the brothers would one day perform together again, saying: "I hope we get on a stage again… But I’m not going to damage myself any further than I have, because of the sheer will of wanting to make it work. I’ve done all a man can do. I don’t want to lose myself."
As the i noted, Matt Goss confirmed that he was "completely estranged" from his twin brother in an interview last year, telling The Guardian that he didn’t want to "lie" anymore about the status of their relationship. When asked for the reasons behind the distance, Matt said: "It’s a tough one. I don’t want to say too much, out of respect for him. But I’m not going to say it’s kumbaya, because it certainly isn’t."
The musician also expressed regret at the pair not continuing with their music career, saying: "To this day, I think we shouldn’t have broken up. We should have just ridden out the storm." Matt is currently working on his new travel company, Goss Travel, as well as what he called a "spicy romance" West End musical and a move into acting. As the i reported, Matt’s new ventures may signal a new chapter in his life, one that is separate from his brother.
