Gucci Unveils Cruise 2026 Collection in Florence
According to a report by WWD, Gucci has unveiled its cruise 2026 collection in Florence, a city that has been synonymous with the brand since its inception in 1921. The collection was showcased at the Gucci Archive in the 15th-century Palazzo Settimanni, a fitting location given the brand’s rich history.
The city of Florence, originally named Florentia, which in Latin means "blossoming," provided the perfect backdrop for the collection. As WWD notes, Gucci is working to "once again flourish after seasons of declining sales." The collection was designed by the brand’s team, as the brand awaits the arrival of new creative director Demna, following the exit of Sabato De Sarno in February.
In an interview with WWD, Gucci’s chief executive officer, Stefano Cantino, highlighted the significance of Florence to the brand, stating, "Gucci is Florence and Florence is Gucci." He also revealed that the collection has a "cinematographic soul" that is reflected in the choice of music, specifically the soundtrack of Claude Lelouch’s 1966 film "A Man and a Woman."
The design team drew inspiration from the Gucci Archive, which comprises around 46,000 pieces and designs by previous creative directors. The collection features a range of styles, including leggings sprinkled with crystals, sleek midi silk dresses, and pencil skirts. As WWD reports, there are also hints of Demna’s signature style, with oversized jackets and strong structured shoulders.
When asked about when Demna will show his first collection for Gucci, Cantino dodged the question, instead emphasizing that the cruise collection is a "continuum that will lead to the most visible signs of Demna." He praised the "extraordinary teamwork" that went into creating the collection, which was showcased in the frescoed and wood-ceilinged rooms of the 15th-century building.
The collection features a range of covetable pieces, including brocade jackets, leather bombers, and lace blouses. The GG monogram is prominently featured, with supersized versions appearing on skirts and belt buckles. WWD notes that the collection also includes standout trenches and mock-fur coats, as well as long gowns, such as a dramatic polka-dot design with a sculptured triple-bow on one shoulder.
The new Gucci Giglio bag, which pays homage to the city of Florence and the Italian word for lily, will be available immediately after the show. Additionally, Gucci has co-created a high jewelry collection with Pomellato, called "Monili," which features leather, gold, and pavé diamonds.
As WWD reports, the second show of the day featured models walking out onto the Piazza Santo Spirito, where attendees sat in cafés and onlookers watched from the windows of surrounding houses. The event highlighted the significance of Gucci and its iconic design codes in modern fashion’s lexicon, providing a strong foundation for Demna to build upon when he takes the reins.
