Harry Potter TV Series Casts Lead Trio as Filming Set to Begin This Summer
In a significant development for fans of the wizarding world, HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” TV series has officially announced its lead cast. According to a report from Variety, Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout have been cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley respectively.
The casting process, which involved over 30,000 actors auditioning for the lead roles, was led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann. In a statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod expressed their delight in announcing the new cast, saying: “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
As reported by Variety, McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout are relatively newcomers to the industry, although they do have some notable credits to their names. McLaughlin recently acted in the upcoming comedy “Grow” on Sky, starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, while Stanton starred as Matilda in “Matilda: The Musical” on the West End from 2023-2024. For Stout, the “Harry Potter” series will mark his first major role.
The trio joins a talented ensemble cast, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner, with Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes.
The “Harry Potter” series has been the subject of controversy in recent years, given author J.K. Rowling’s views on the transgender community. However, HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys has assured fans that the show will not be influenced by Rowling’s personal views, stating: “We already have a show on HBO from her called ‘C.B. Strike’ that we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”
As Variety notes, filming for the series is expected to begin this summer, with the show set to be a major production for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. With a talented cast and crew on board, fans of the franchise will be eagerly anticipating the show’s release.
