Highlander Reboot: Stahelski Spills Exclusive Update on Cavill Starring Film

Highlander Reboot: Chad Stahelski Reveals Possible Release Window and Filming Update

According to a recent interview with Collider, director Chad Stahelski has revealed that the long-gestating Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill, is set to begin filming later this year, with a possible release date of 2027 or 2028. The news comes as a significant update for a project that has been in development for years, with Cavill attached to star since 2021.

In an interview with Collider’s Aidan Kelley, alongside producer Josh Oreck, Stahelski confirmed that if all goes according to plan, cameras will roll in September, and audiences can expect to see the film well before the end of the decade. "If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we’ll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander," Stahelski said.

This update is a welcome development for fans of the franchise, who have been eagerly awaiting the reboot. Originally announced in 2021, Highlander has kept a relatively low profile as Stahelski focused on expanding the John Wick universe. However, with Stahelski now actively prepping the film, the long-awaited return to the fantastical highlands of Scotland could be right around the corner.

As reported by Collider, Stahelski is looking to apply everything he’s learned from crafting the John Wick films to the Highlander reboot. He hinted that while we might not get the fish tank transitions from the original Highlander, stylistic nods are definitely on the table. "I don’t know if I’m going through a fish tank, but let’s see what we got," Stahelski said.

In a previous interview with Collider, Stahelski revealed how the plot would be changed, but would still honor the mythology of the original while expanding its scope globally and narratively. "We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes," he explained. "There’s big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it’s a bit of a love story, but not how you think."

Stahelski, who describes himself as a "Zatōichi superfan," has made it clear he’s interested in exploring immortality through both physicality and emotion — and he believes Cavill is the perfect fit for that complexity. "My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation," he said. "So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts."

Collider reports that production on Highlander will hopefully begin in September, with a possible release date of 2027 or 2028. Fans of the franchise will be eagerly awaiting more updates, and in the meantime, can revisit the original Highlander film.

The Highlander reboot is being produced by Josh Oreck, and Collider has been providing regular updates on the project’s development. With Stahelski at the helm, and Cavill set to star, expectations are high for this long-awaited reboot. As more information becomes available, Collider will continue to provide updates on this exciting project.
