Hunger for Closeness: An Unsettling Human Impulse

UK’s Enjoyyepy: The All-Girl Band Taking On Eurovision 2024

The UK’s Eurovision entry for 2024, Remember Monday, is set to take the stage in Switzerland this week. The all-girl band, consisting of Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele, will perform their song, What The Hell Just Happened. With their unique blend of country-pop and musical theatre influences, they are hoping to bring a fresh sound to the competition.

According to an interview with the BBC, since being announced as the UK’s Eurovision act in March, the band has barely slept in their own beds. “It’s definitely in the single digits,” says singer Holly-Anne Hull, trying to calculate how many nights she has spent at home. “We don’t have time for that.” The band has been on a whirlwind tour of Europe, meeting fans, filming endless TikToks, and performing their song to anyone who’ll listen.

Remember Monday formed at school over a decade ago and determinedly stayed together during long periods where, in their words, “no-one was listening”. Even after a successful turn on The Voice in 2019, Charlotte had to return to her job as a deputy head teacher, while Lauren and Holly-Anne appeared in West End shows like Phantom of the Opera and Six: The Musical. Eurovision offers a chance to change that.

The band’s song, What The Hell Just Happened, is a certified banger – full of glittery glam-pop flourishes and sizzling harmonies that they can pull off live. As quoted in the BBC article, the band members discussed their experiences and the story behind their song. “When I first heard What The Hell Just Happened, I thought it sounded like something from Six: The Musical… Then I discovered you’d actually been in it,” the BBC’s Mark Savage noted.

Lauren Byrne, who was part of the musical, revealed that she played Jane Seymour in Six: The Musical. “She’s the one that died, instead of being beheaded,” she added. When asked if it was always the plan to put a musical theatre vibe in the song, Lauren explained that they wrote a brief for the song and included many references.

The band’s set will include a fallen chandelier and a mock boudoir, while their pastel-coloured costumes have been described as “Bridgerton meets Moulin Rouge”. When asked about the line in the song about ripping their dress, Lauren joked that it was a sneaky Bucks Fizz reference.

The trio have been performing together since they met at sixth form college in Farnborough. When they graduated, they all had full-time jobs – so they had to keep the band together in their spare time. Charlotte was a deputy head teacher, while Lauren and Holly-Anne were in the theatre.

The band has loads of festival performances booked for the summer – so life won’t grind to a halt after Eurovision. Even if they don’t get the result they hope for, they’ll still be singing together.

In conclusion, Remember Monday is a talented all-girl band with a unique sound and a dream to succeed in Eurovision 2024. Their musical theatre influences and catchy song make them a standout act in this year’s competition. As reported by the BBC, they are hoping for a placement in the single digits and a memorable experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.

As the band prepares to take the stage, they are focused on giving a theatrical performance that will leave a lasting impression. With their combined experience in musical theatre and their country-pop sound, they are sure to bring a fresh and exciting energy to the competition.

The BBC’s article highlights the band’s journey, from their formation at school to their current Eurovision entry. As stated in the article, “Eurovision is all we talk about, even if we’re not together.” The band’s dedication and hard work have led them to this moment, and they are ready to shine on the Eurovision stage.
