Brazilian Football Confederation’s New Rule Sparks Controversy: Memphis Depay Speaks Out

In a recent development, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has introduced a new rule that prohibits players from standing on the ball during matches, a move that has sparked controversy among football enthusiasts. The new rule, which came into effect recently, states that players who stand on the ball with both feet will be issued a yellow card.

The rule change has been met with criticism from several quarters, including Memphis Depay, the Dutch-born Ghanaian forward who currently plays for Corinthians. In a post on X, Depay expressed his disappointment with the CBF’s decision, citing that it has no real impact on the game. “I actually came to Brazil to witness jogo bonito firsthand, but now the CBF has announced that no player can stand on the ball or they will receive a yellow card. It’s not like it’s a significant factor in football—I see no issue here,” he wrote.

Depay, a former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid player, added that Brazilian football is known for its flair and skill, commonly referred to as jogo bonito, which translates to “the beautiful game.” He wondered about the direction of the CBF, stating that the joy and passion expressed on the field should have no boundaries. “Brazilian football is ascending and deserves global recognition! There’s so much talent here. The joy and passion we express on the field should have no boundaries. So I truly wonder about the direction of the CBF—who is deciding the future of this beautiful footballing nation?” he added.

According to the CBF’s official release, standing on the ball with both feet is now a punishable offence and will result in a yellow card. Referees have been instructed to award the opposing team a free kick at the spot where the incident occurs. “The CBF’s Refereeing Commission has instructed officials to penalize this action with an indirect free kick for the opposing team at the location of the foul and to caution the offender with a yellow card,” the notice stated.

The incident that sparked the controversy occurred during the Campeonato Paulista title final against Palmeiras on Thursday, March 28, 2025. Depay was at the centre of a scuffle that led to multiple red cards in the final moments of the game. In an attempt to waste time while Corinthians led 1-0 on aggregate, Depay took the ball toward the corner flag and stood on it with both feet, provoking an intense reaction from Palmeiras players.

The incident quickly escalated, with players from both teams rushing in as officials struggled to restore order. It was one of several fiery moments in the match, which saw three red cards issued. As per reports from The Mirror, Depay’s actions led to a heated exchange between players and officials, raising concerns about the impact of the new rule on the game.

The CBF’s decision to introduce the new rule has raised questions about the future of Brazilian football, with Depay’s comments highlighting the concerns of many players and fans. The new rule has sparked a debate about the role of flair and skill in the game, with many arguing that it is an essential part of Brazilian football. As reported by ESPN, the CBF’s move has been met with resistance from several quarters, with many calling for a rethink of the decision.

In related news, Brazilian football has been gaining recognition globally for its exciting brand of football, with many players and coaches praising the country’s unique style of play. However, with the introduction of this new rule, it remains to be seen how the game will evolve in the coming months. The CBF’s decision has also sparked concerns about the impact on the country’s footballing culture, with many fearing that it may stifle the creativity and flair that Brazilian football is known for.

The development has also raised questions about the influence of European-style football on the Brazilian game, with some arguing that the CBF is trying to adopt a more Westernized approach to the sport. However, as Depay’s comments suggest, many players and fans believe that the country’s unique style of play should be preserved and encouraged.

According to sources, the CBF’s decision is aimed at improving player behaviour and reducing time-wasting tactics during matches. However, critics argue that the new rule may have unintended consequences, such as stifling creativity and flair on the pitch.

As the debate rages on, football fans and players alike will be keeping a close eye on how the new rule is implemented and its impact on the game.
