Inside the Couch: Therapy Sessions Turn Lives Around

TV Review: A Night of Insightful Programming on BBC and Beyond

Last night’s television lineup offered a diverse range of shows that catered to different interests and tastes. According to a report by The Guardian, a highlight of the evening was the BBC One series "Change Your Mind, Change Your Life With Matt and Emma Willis", which aired at 11 pm.

The programme, as noted by The Guardian, follows the lives of clients before, during, and after therapy sessions, providing an insightful look into the benefits of therapy. The show’s concept, though potentially nauseating, has been executed in a fascinating manner, leaving viewers with moments of realisation when applying it to their own thought patterns. The first episode featured a woman struggling with panic attacks and a man who felt inadequate after experiencing a stroke.

In a completely different vein, the Eurovision Song Contest Semi-Final 2025 took over BBC One at 8 pm. The contest, which The Guardian described as having the "weight of musical history on their shoulders", saw Swedish hopefuls VÆB, KAJ, and San Marino’s DJ Gabry Ponte vying for a spot in Saturday’s grand final in Basel. The show was commentated on by Rylan and Scott Mills.

Meanwhile, on BBC Two, the 8:30 pm slot was occupied by "Jules and Greg’s Wild Swim". This wild swimming travelogue, hosted by acting couple Julie Wilson Nimmo and Greg Hemphill, has been well-received for its blend of humour and connection to the mental health benefits of natural water. The last leg of their journey, which took them to the beaches of Mull and Iona, was both bracing and beautiful.

ITV1’s 9 pm slot was dedicated to "Shock & Awe: Trump’s Return", a documentary that saw journalist Robert Moore travel across the United States to meet people directly affected by Donald Trump’s second term as President. The programme included an interview with Josh, a member of the far-right Proud Boys group who was convicted for his role in the Capitol riots but was later pardoned.

BBC Three aired "Convicting My Ex" at 9 pm, a documentary that followed Ellie Wilson as she campaigned for rape survivors after secretly recording her then-boyfriend’s confession. The programme also explored the online trolling she faced as a result of her activism.

Lastly, Sky Max aired "Joe Lycett’s United States of Birmingham" at 9 pm, a show that concluded the comedian’s quest to foster civic links with North American towns sharing the name of his birthplace, Birmingham. The episode saw Lycett visit Birmingham, Alabama, and attempt to win over a raucous crowd at a local comedy club.

As noted by The Guardian, the evening’s programming offered something for everyone, from insightful documentaries to entertaining travelogues and comedy shows. These programmes demonstrate the diversity of television content available, providing viewers with a range of options to suit their interests.

The publication also noted that "Change Your Mind, Change Your Life With Matt and Emma Willis" offers "an ‘Aha!’ moment or two when applying it to your own thought patterns". This, according to The Guardian, makes the show a "fascinating watch".
