Jamie Lee Curtis Opens Up About Plastic Surgery Regrets and Addiction Battle
Renowned actress Jamie Lee Curtis has spoken candidly about her experiences with plastic surgery and addiction in a recent interview with 60 Minutes. The Oscar-winning star revealed that she had undergone surgery at the age of 25 due to a comment made by a cinematographer on the set of the 1985 aerobics drama Perfect, which also starred John Travolta.
According to The Guardian, Curtis said that the cinematographer had refused to film her one day, stating that "her eyes are baggy". The comment had a profound impact on Curtis, who subsequently underwent plastic surgery as soon as the movie finished. However, she has since expressed regret over the decision, stating that it was something she "regretted immediately" and has regretted ever since.
The Guardian reports that Curtis has become a vocal advocate for self-acceptance and body positivity, encouraging women to embrace their natural beauty. "I’ve become a really public advocate to say to women: ‘You’re gorgeous and you’re perfect the way you are,’" she said. "It was not a good thing for me to do."
Curtis also opened up about her struggles with addiction, revealing that she began taking painkillers after her surgery and eventually developed a dependency on opiates. In a 2018 interview with People, she admitted to having a 10-year run of addiction, during which she "stole, connived" and hid her behaviour from the public eye. However, Curtis has been sober for 26 years and has spoken publicly about her journey, warning about the dangers of addiction.
As reported by the Guardian, Curtis has also expressed concern about the rise of cosmetic procedures and the impact of social media on body image. In 2021, she stated that "the current trend of fillers and procedures, and this obsession with filtering, and the things that we do to adjust our appearance on Zoom are wiping out generations of beauty." She added that "once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back."
In addition to her advocacy work, Curtis has recently spoken out on social media about a fake commercial that uses her likeness, which she described as "totally AI fake". She appealed to Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg for help in taking down the commercial, stating that it diminished her opportunities to speak her truth. Fortunately, her efforts paid off, and the commercial was removed.
Throughout her career, Curtis has established herself as a talented and versatile actress, winning her first Oscar in 2023 for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She has since starred in acclaimed drama series The Bear and alongside Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl, and is set to appear in upcoming projects, including comedy sequel Freakier Friday with Lindsay Lohan and crime thriller series Scarpetta with Nicole Kidman.
