UFC Vegas 107 Sees Last-Minute Fight Replacement as MarQuel Mederos Pulled Out Due to Illness
In a sudden turn of events, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced that Lightweight contender MarQuel Mederos has been removed from his scheduled bout with Bolaji Oki at UFC Vegas 107 due to an illness. According to a report by MMAmania.com, Contender Series alum Michael Aswell has stepped in on just three days’ notice to compete in “Sin City”.
Aswell (10-2) had previously competed on Season 8 of Contender Series against Bogdan Grad, but lost via split decision. Despite not receiving a contract, UFC CEO Dana White promised Aswell that he would be on top of the matchmaker’s list for a short-notice opportunity. Aswell decided to remain active, taking on a fight against Dorian Ramos late last year, which he won via unanimous decision.
For those who may not be aware, Aswell is a former Fury FC Featherweight champion. His addition to the UFC Vegas 107 fight card provides a new opportunity for him to showcase his skills on a larger stage.
Meanwhile, Oki (9-2) had generated significant hype after knocking out Dylan Salvador on Season 7 of Contender Series. However, he has struggled to live up to expectations in his UFC career thus far. In his debut, he won a split decision over Timmy Cuamba, but then lost via choke to Chris Duncan at UFC Paris.
The UFC Vegas 107 event is set to take place at the APEX venue in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will feature a range of exciting matchups. In the main event, Gilbert Burns will face off against Michael Morales in a welterweight crossroads bout. The co-main event will see Paul Craig take on Rodolfo Bellato in a light heavyweight showdown.
MMAmania.com will provide live round-by-round coverage of the entire UFC Vegas 107 fight card, starting with the ESPN+ “Prelims” undercard bouts at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the remaining main card balance at 9 p.m. ET.
