Latifah Speaks Out: What’s Behind ‘Equalizer’ Axe?

Queen Latifah Speaks Out on Cancellation of The Equalizer

The entertainment industry was rocked yesterday with the news that CBS had cancelled the popular drama series, The Equalizer, after a successful five-season run. The show, which stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative, has been a staple on the CBS schedule since its debut. In response to the cancellation, Latifah took to Instagram to express her gratitude to fans and the show’s crew, while also teasing her next project.

According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Latifah addressed the end of The Equalizer on Instagram, stating that playing the "kick-ass role" of Robyn McCall was "everything I hoped it would be." She also expressed her excitement in bringing such roles and projects to life, saying "Shakim [Compere] and I at Flavor Unit are always excited to bring these kinds of roles and projects to life — and then we just hope you love them as much as we do." Latifah also noted that The Equalizer had "blown past every dream we had for it," and that having the opportunity to do the show for five seasons "honestly feels surreal."

The Hollywood Reporter notes that ratings for The Equalizer had declined after its run time shifted to a later hour on Sunday nights. The cancellation of The Equalizer follows in the footsteps of other CBS series, including FBI: International, FBI: Most Wanted and Poppa’s House, which were also cancelled. Despite the decline in ratings, Latifah praised the show’s "amazing cast, crew, producers and writers," saying "Y’all have been so loyal, so loud and so ride-or-die — and that’s exactly why we keep doing this. We can’t thank you enough. It means the world to us."

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Latifah also teased her next project, promising fans that she’d "be back kicking a** in something new real soon." She added, "Can’t wait to share it with you." Latifah served as an executive producer of The Equalizer alongside Shakim Compere, Joseph C. Wilson, Debra Martin Chase, John Davis, John Fox, Loretha Jones, and Rob Hanning. The show is a co-production of Universal Television and CBS Studios.

The cancellation of The Equalizer marks the end of an era for fans of the show, but it’s clear that Latifah and the show’s team are grateful for the opportunity to have brought the series to life. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, CBS’ 2025-26 schedule will be announced on May 7, leaving fans wondering what’s next for the network.

In conclusion, the cancellation of The Equalizer may come as a shock to fans, but it’s clear that Queen Latifah and the show’s team are grateful for the opportunity to have brought the series to life. With Latifah promising to return with a new project soon, fans have something to look forward to. As quoted in The Hollywood Reporter, Latifah said, "The Equalizer blew past every dream we had for it, and having the opportunity to do this for five seasons honestly feels surreal."
