London Marathon 2025: Route, Runners, and Everything Else You Need to Know

The 45th running of the London Marathon is set to take place in Greenwich on Sunday morning, with a diverse field of 56,000 athletes, including elite runners, costumed fun-runners, and wheelchair competitors. The event, which is the world’s largest annual one-day fundraising event, has raised over £1.3bn for charity since its inception in 1981.

As The Guardian reports, Kipchoge, who became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours in 2019, is seeking his fifth London Marathon victory. His main competitors include defending champion Alexander Mutiso Munyao and Tamirat Tola, who won gold at the Paris Games.

In the women’s field, Hassan will face competition from Tigst Assefa, the silver medallist at the Paris Games, and other top athletes. The winners of the men’s and women’s races will receive £41,000, with a £112,000 bonus for any athlete setting a new course record.

The London Marathon also features a number of notable British athletes, including Eilish McColgan, who is making her debut in the event, and David Weir, who is seeking his ninth victory in the men’s wheelchair race.
