Lorry Driver Wins £5.2m in Lotto Jackpot
A 60-year-old lorry driver from Barking has won a staggering £5.2m in the Lotto jackpot. Gary MacDonald, who has worked as a driver for most of his life, said he couldn’t believe his luck when he received an email from the National Lottery on May 1st.
According to the Daily Star, Gary had woken up at 5:20am for a normal day’s work, but his life changed forever when he checked his email. The email read: “Good news about your ticket.” Initially, Gary thought he had won £35, but he soon realised there was an additional prize of over £5.2m.
“It is difficult to make sense of it. It said I had won £5,208,504 and to ‘please call The National Lottery straight away’,” Gary said in an interview with the Daily Star. His wife, Anita, 55, thought they had won “five thousand and something”, which Gary promptly corrected.
Gary tried to call the National Lottery, but the line was closed at 5:30am. He had to wait until 8:00am for the phone lines to open. Once he realised he probably didn’t need to work another day in his life, Gary rang his boss and resigned. “It dawned on me that there was absolutely no point in doing another day’s work, not today, not any day. So, at 6:30am, I called my boss and resigned,” he said.
The Daily Star reports that Gary and his wife have already made their first purchase with the winnings – a Shark vacuum cleaner. Gary, who has worked hard all his life without much time for hobbies, said it might take him a while to adapt to his new life.
“We have worked hard all our lives and never really had time for hobbies or past times. Any spare time has been spent supporting others, we were brought up to put others first,” Gary said. He added that it will be amazing to have the time and money to now treat themselves a little and maybe try something new.
Top of the couple’s wish list is to finally tie-the-knot. They were already looking at holding a civil ceremony later in the year but have now brought it forward to the summer with plans to make it a bigger celebration.
