Magda Szubanski Reveals Stage 4 Blood Cancer Diagnosis
Australian comedian and actress Magda Szubanski has announced that she has been diagnosed with stage 4 blood cancer, a rare and aggressive type of lymphoma. In a video posted on social media, Szubanski, 64, revealed that she had been diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that affects the lymphatic system.
"It’s pretty confronting … but new treatments keep coming down the pipeline constantly," Szubanski said in the video, as reported by the ABC. "I’m lucky to be getting absolutely world-class care here in Melbourne. I won’t sugar-coat it: it’s rough. But I’m hopeful. I’m being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I’ve never felt more held by the people around me."
Szubanski, best known for her roles in the film Babe and the popular Australian sitcom Kath & Kim, has begun Nordic protocol treatment, a chemotherapy regimen used to treat Mantle Cell Lymphoma. The ABC reports that Szubanski’s social media announcement was met with supportive comments from other Australian entertainers, including television personality Rove McManus, who wrote "Lots of love and support to you beautiful one."
The entertainment industry has rallied around Szubanski, with television host Julia Zemiro expressing her support, saying "so much love and courage and hugs." Television chef and author Poh Ling Yeow also offered her support, writing "Oh Mags, I’m so sorry to hear this … news, you’re such an inspiration to so many of us, an icon for the ages." Szubanski has had a successful career spanning over 20 years, achieving international acclaim for her role as Esme Hoggett in the film Babe. She has also won seven Logies and has twice been named the Most Popular Person on Television in 2003 and 2004. In 2016, she released her memoir, Reckoning, describing her childhood and the challenges she faced growing up.
In addition to her acting career, Szubanski has been a vocal advocate for social issues, speaking out against weight stigma and diet culture. She has also detailed her struggles with body image as part of the ABC series Magda’s Big National Health Check.
Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare type of blood cancer that begins in the lymphatic system. According to the Cancer Council’s website, it is one of about 60 sub-types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The cancer affects the outer edge — also known as the mantle zone — of a type of white blood cell called a B-cell in the lymph node follicle.
Szubanski’s diagnosis has sparked an outpouring of support from the entertainment industry and beyond. As she undergoes treatment, she has expressed her gratitude for the care and support she has received so far. The ABC will continue to provide updates on Szubanski’s condition as more information becomes available.
The news of Szubanski’s diagnosis has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with many of her colleagues and fans expressing their support and admiration for the talented actress and comedian. As she begins her treatment journey, Szubanski’s courage and resilience are an inspiration to many.
