Manchester City Kick Off Club World Cup Campaign Against Wydad
Manchester City begin their Club World Cup campaign today against Wydad, with the majority of the squad looking to prove themselves after an underwhelming season by their high standards. The team finished third in the Premier League, lost in the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, and exited the Champions League and Carabao Cup early.
According to the Manchester Evening News, City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, will be looking to see which players have what it takes to go again as the team seeks to recapture their Premier League crown next term. The Club World Cup is seen as the first step towards achieving this goal.
One player hoping to stake a claim for a regular spot in the team is Oscar Bobb, who has been out with a leg fracture for most of the season. The 21-year-old Norwegian impressed during City’s tour of America last year, but has perhaps been forgotten with the arrival of new signings such as Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Guardiola has high praise for Bobb, saying: “He’s electric, in the small spaces he’s really good. Sometimes in the last part he has to be more composed and reduce his speed, for example the chance he missed he has to be more calm. It’s a question of time, he’s young but his work ethic is unbelievable. He can play as a striker, pockets, right or left winger. When he’s comfortable he goes and dribbles, and when he does that it’s a big step for our attack.”
The Club World Cup will see 32 of the world’s best club teams, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich, compete across 63 games from June 14-July 13. Fans can watch every match live and for free by signing up to DAZN.
The Manchester Evening News understands that City’s rebuild is set to start in America, with new signings already in place. The team will be looking to make a strong impression in the Club World Cup and use it as a springboard for the rest of the season.
