Manchester United are set to accelerate their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to sources close to the club.
The Red Devils have identified Martinez as their top target in the goalkeeping position, with former chief scout Mick Brown exclusively telling Football Insider that the 32-year-old is Ruben Amorim’s number one choice.
This development comes after Andre Onana confessed that he is uncertain about his future at Old Trafford, amid ongoing speculation about his potential departure.
Brown told Football Insider in April that Manchester United will accept offers for Onana, with the club valuing him at around £50million. This has led the club to explore alternative options, with Martinez emerging as a prime target.
Football Insider exclusively revealed that Martinez is ready to leave Aston Villa and has hired super-agent Jorge Mendes to help him secure a transfer.
Brown told Football Insider that Martinez’s agents are pushing for a move away from Villa Park, with potential suitors in Saudi Arabia and across Europe being considered.
“Emi Martinez is going to be available from Aston Villa,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s going to be among the top targets for Ruben Amorim if he decides he wants to strengthen in goal.
“He recently changed agents, he’s with Jorge Mendes now who has very strong connections at United.
“The problem at the moment is that none of that matters unless they get an offer for Onana.
“He’s admitted he isn’t sure about his future at the club, and I think they would be happy to move him on, but it depends if there is any interest.
“There are no offers on the table at the moment, so it’s all just a possibility.
“But he’s a player they want, so if they can move Onana on, he’s the one they’ll go for.”
Martinez’s potential move to Manchester United could be facilitated by his new agent, Jorge Mendes, who has strong connections at the club.
Manchester United are not the only club interested in Martinez, with several other suitors expected to make a move for the goalkeeper.
The Red Devils are expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, with Amorim looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
In addition to Martinez, Manchester United are also monitoring the situation of Alejandro Garnacho, who is expected to leave the club this summer.
Brown told Football Insider on 14 June that Garnacho wants to remain in the Premier League, with multiple clubs keeping tabs on his situation.
Following a bust-up with Amorim over his role in the squad, the Argentina international is widely expected to walk away from United this summer.
Football Insider revealed that Garnacho is still in high demand despite his falling-out with Amorim, with multiple clubs interested in signing him.
