Álex Márquez Takes MotoGP Victory in Spain
Álex Márquez of the Gresini Racing team secured his first MotoGP victory on Sunday at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez. The win came after a dramatic race that saw his brother, Marc Márquez, crash out.
According to reports from Marca, Álex Márquez took the lead on lap 6, but made a mistake in the braking zone and allowed his brother Marc to pass Pecco Bagnaia. However, Marc was unable to maintain his position and crashed out on lap 7, at the curve named after Carmelo Ezpeleta.
The crash marked a turning point in the race, and Álex Márquez capitalized on the opportunity to take the lead. He passed Fabio Quartararo and then maintained a comfortable gap to secure his first MotoGP victory. As Marca reports, “Álex no se cortaba y adelantaba a Bagnaia. Además, luego no dio opción al turinés para replicar. Impresionante.”
The victory marked a significant milestone for Álex Márquez, who had not won a race in the top class since 2019. As noted by Marca, “Su gran día tenía que llegar y lo hizo en casa, ante la zona Nieto-Peluqui, donde se paró a celebrarlo.”
Quartararo finished second, with Bagnaia in third. The victory puts Álex Márquez at the top of the standings, with a one-point lead over his brother Marc.
The Spanish Grand Prix was held in front of a large crowd, with 101,099 spectators in attendance. The circuit has been renewed for the next five years, with no rotation, which was seen as a positive development.
Marc Márquez’s crash was a surprise, given his experience and skill. As Marca notes, “La cruz fue para su hermano Marc, que se cayó.” Despite the crash, Marc was able to recover and finish 12th, minimizing the damage.
The MotoGP championship is heating up, with Álex Márquez emerging as a contender. As Marca reports, “Álex es líder por un punto respecto al 93 y con 20 sobre Bagnaia, sólo tercero tras un gran Quartararo.”
The next MotoGP event will be closely watched, as riders look to build on their performances in Spain. For now, Álex Márquez is basking in the glory of his first MotoGP victory.
