Marvel Shifts ‘Avengers’ Sequels’ Release Schedules

Marvel Studios Delays Release of Next Two Avengers Films

In a move that has sparked widespread interest in the entertainment industry, Marvel Studios has announced that it is pushing back the release dates of its next two Avengers films, directed by the Russo Brothers. According to a report from Deadline, Avengers: Doomsday has been moved from May 1 to December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is shifting from May 7 to December 17, 2027.

The decision to delay the release of these highly anticipated films is reportedly due to the sheer scale of the projects, with insiders noting that they are among the biggest ever made. The extra time will allow the filmmakers to execute their vision without rushing the production process. Disney/Marvel has opted for December dates, given the success they’ve had in the holiday corridor with titles like Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production, with a star-studded cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Danny Ramirez, Hannah John-Kamen, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Channing Tatum, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Lewis Pullman, and Robert Downey Jr.

In addition to the Avengers films, Disney has also shared updates on a pair of high-profile titles from 20th Century Studios. Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi, is set to be released on March 27, 2026. The film, based on the novel by Peter Heller, follows a grieving pilot and his loyal dog as they cling to survival in a remote Colorado airfield. The cast also includes Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.

Another title getting a release date is The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is expected to hit theaters on May 1, 2026. The sequel to the 2006 fashion-themed dramedy will follow Runway magazine’s haughty editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) as she navigates the challenges of the declining print industry. While castings haven’t been formally announced, it is likely that Emily Blunt and/or Anne Hathaway will reprise their roles.

"Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are just two of the many highly anticipated films that have been delayed in recent years," said Deadline in its report. "The delays have been attributed to a range of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing complexity of the films being produced."

The entertainment industry has seen a number of high-profile delays in recent years, with many films being pushed back due to production issues or changes in the market. However, with the success of films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avatar: The Way of Water, Disney/Marvel is clearly confident that its titles will perform well in the holiday corridor.

In related news, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is set for an IMAX/3D re-release on October 3, 2025, ahead of the threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19. The re-release is expected to do gangbusters business, given the historically successful performance of the first two films.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: fans will have to wait a little longer to see the next two Avengers films. However, with the talent and resources involved, it is likely that the end result will be well worth the wait.

According to Deadline, "The Dog Stars and The Devil Wears Prada 2 are just two of the many exciting projects in development at 20th Century Studios. With a range of genres and styles represented, there is something for everyone in the studio’s upcoming slate."
